My good friend Tony Chris once proposed the idea of an electronic Haunted Deck and suggested a method. I told him then that it was not feasible. That was nearly two years ago. Then, I figured out a way. It was simple, reliable, and above all, it worked. Since then, I’ve lost track of the number of prototypes and times I figured it was undoable. But with Tony’s patience and invaluable assistance, the two of us have managed to bring his idea to fruition. The Haunted Deck effect is really strong and it has a variety of other applications.
Here some points: The world’s first remote controlled Haunted Deck! A selected card is signed and returned to the deck. The deck is placed on the ground. Suddenly the deck begins to slowly part itself, cutting hauntingly to the spectator’s signed selection. It looks totally eerie! • Completely electronic with NO THREADS! • Performer has complete hands-free control of the deck animation at all times from up to 30 feet away. • Unit recharges from your computer. • Pre-order introductory price of only $199.95. Ships October 21st. You can see Tony performing with it on the streets of Vancouver here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbhlBogF_tE |

I was privileged to see this demonstrated in a real life setting, a restaurant. The effect was EXACTLY as you see on the video. The deck slowly and eerily seperates at precisely the selected card.
I have seen lots of Haunted Deck routines over the years, but this is the first I have ever seen that is completely "hands off" allowing the magi to focus on the presentation. Many times the term "reputation maker" is thrown about without any deserved merit. This is one of those effects that truly justifies the title. For those of us who are always seeking the effect that creates the "memorable audience moment", you've found it. Bravo Christopher & Tony Gerry (In the interest of full disclosure, I am friends with both Christopher and Tony. However, they have neither asked for, nor solicited my opinion)

Looks cool.
The middle of the deck seems to be a key phrase used. The effect looks super smooth and the hands off idea is great! I'm assuming that the cards cannot be shuffled, cut, or anything more and that the chosen card needs to be placed near whatever gimmick is there. The deck really calls out for an interesting story to match with the spooky deck parting.

Hey all,
Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate it. I have had a lifelong love affair with the haunted deck. Ever since I got into magic over 20 years ago, the Haunted deck was always one of the most interesting and intriguing effects for me. Visually it is one of magic's greatest effects! I have done every version imaginable known to mankind, created many different versions myself before "Haunting" but none have been able to satisfy my lust for the ultimate haunted deck routine until now. My quest has come to fruition at last thanks to my good friend and Genius extraordinaire, Christopher Taylor. Haunting has been in the making for two years as Christopher said and believe me when I tell you that it has been a roller coaster ride of many ups and downs to get to what it now has become. We were both haunted by this endeavor and it was almost the end of my sanity at one point. You could not even imagine the turbulent nights of failure and the ecstasy of final conquest of our haunted offering. I could write a novel about the darkness I felt some days about the short comings of some of the early prototypes. To say that we went through a lot of prototypes would be the understatement of the century! Christopher and I hand make each and every deck to our complete satisfaction together in his chamber of wonder throughout the day. Haunting goes beyond any card effect you can imagine due to the 100% complete visual magic that happens. It will play huge as I have performed it completely surrounded with the deck on the ground, myself over 2o feet away from it and about 150 people watching the magic in circular fashion. It really does play that big!!!! I ask of you, how many card tricks can play extremely HUGE, visually to hundreds of people in live performance, without cameras, projectors and screens! To call it a close up trick would be a crime as it plays unbelievably large in the the real world! The performance options are mammoth. You can present it as serious and dramatic as you can imagine, spooky and freakishly bizarre as your imagination will take you to, as a mind over matter type of effect utilizing psyonic/telekinetic type influences or as you can see in our demo, quite whimsical and care free. That is how I perform it most of the time and my audience reactions are very satisfying but there are occasions where I love to play it full throttle drama and even dark to get the audience gasps I crave from time to time. Christopher has gone beyond what I thought was imaginable to create the final chapter in the Haunted Deck. It is soooooooooo easy to perfom that it should be illegal and outlawed! Saysold1. You ask if the deck can be shuffled or cut. YES!!!! Once you know what the deck is all about, you will understand that it can be shuffled to a certain degree either partially real, false shuffled or a controlled real shuffle. You can use cuts as well if you wish as I use to do that all the time. These days for me anyway, the visual of the card being placed by the spectator into the middle of the deck is more than enough convincing as it is the last thing they see before I put the entire deck onto the ground. I have even given the deck to spectators and have asked them to place the deck on the ground or table. I certainly don't do it often that way, but when I know my environment, have complete spectator management and feel particularly confident on some nights, I have done this. Lately though I rarely will add any shuffles or cuts as for me, it simply is overkill! However, there is nothing stopping the performer from shuffles and cuts if that is what they desire. And yes, lastly, being a bizarrist myself, I do perform a version that is spooky and I use a deck that I have made from the Ellusionist 1800 series old aged cards and even a "Haunting" version that utilzes Tarot Cards. Christopher has his own spooky version too that uses old 4 X 6 sepia toned worn and ravaged picture cards depicting..........Woops, I almost gave away one of his "Pet Tricks". Very naughty of me. Anyhoo, Haunting is not only perfect for every day magic use, but with the Halloween season around the corner, you can be sure I will be Haunting many folks in my Halloween corporate bookings and private Halloween close up shows. Sincerely, Tony Chris

Hi David,
The answer to how much pocket space the remote takes up is "0" pocket space. There is no remote in your pocket whatsoever. That is what makes it so cool! It is operated by a T_ _ Switch. Tony

Some people do not like toe switches and with that in mind, I designed the transmitter so it can disconnected from the hands free toe switch and kept in your pocket; it works great. The dimensions of the transmitter are 1.5" x 2.25".
Also, I have been asked if Craig Filicetti contributed to Haunting. While Craig and I are collaborating on a couple of projects, this is not one of them. Cheers. Christopher |

Very cool - so is it possible to special order the deck with the antique looking ellusionist cards or the great Heirloom or Gypsy decks that Christian (Cardshark) is making in Germany?
Thanks for the detailed responses - this is an exciting effect no doubt. BRETT

Can I move the gimmick to another deck?

You can move it easily to a larger deck, such as a Taro. Putting it into your own deck can be done but it would be tricky. You would not believe the number of steps needed to make these things.
