The Old Joe story was quite the production.
Mick was a great guy for dealing with Ted and I and also the demands of a live performance with Slim King and myself. We really had a great time out in KA. when we recorded the Old Joe, segment during the Midnight Carnival of Wonder show. A couple of people have contacted me for links to the JINX BROADCAST and they can be found a few posts up. -Jim

I love the tone/content/ambience of these broadcasts.
And as always, great to hear Mick! Miles of awesome thoughts. "We have to define mentalism in order to improve it" and "I want to leave the place better than when I got here" were my two favorites. D. P.S. Not to spoil anything but you can tell pretty quickly that this conversation was in person, not over the phone. Very cool to be a fly on that wall. |

I agree with all the above in that it was a fantastic broadcast and interview. well done Jim for all the broadcasts, they are a fine set and long may they continue, they make great listening while driving.....
I have one question for Mick....I am aware of how highly you regard the importance of character development in mentalism and clarity of who the character you portray is.... My question is, how can you correlate a clearly defined character with the mystery of the effects that you perform? It seems to me (and I may be entirely wrong, and happy to be so) that the more of a character you are during your mentalism set, is directly proportional to how much more theatre is present, thereby possibly reducing the mystery of the effects performed. If I were in the audience and a full theatrical set with characters were presented before me, I may simply lay all explanations for any "impossible" conjuring performed to be down to using props, actors and stooges and the like.....I hope this makes sense. This is of genuine interest for me, because the balance is critical in my opinion and I just want to know, being as successful as you are, how you entertain this balance Mick? Kam

The broadcast makes for a great driving companion. Very enjoyable interview, and the tips at the start were of great interest too. It's obviously must be a lot of work to put it together, but fingers crossed for many more.

It is a critical yet delicate decision--too much character and the role can overshadow your presentation; too little character and your persona risks being non-relevant. For example, haven't we all seen silent performances by magicians who chose background music that was far more interesting than their effects? So, your character must 'fit' your existing personality like a well-tailored suit. It should allow you freedom to move and react without binding and pulling on you. To be fair, I have two major things going in my favor here at the resort...and both are wonderful for keeping 'balance'. First, I was fortunate to be able to create my character-role for my client instead of adapting to an already-established one. Second, my character is on display at other events throughout the week...this allows the guests great opportunity to accept my character's personality so, by the time I perform my mentalism act, they already understand 'me'. I hope I have answered your questions, Kam. If not, let me know and I'll take another shot at it. THANK YOU ALL for the kind comments about the interview! Warm regards, Mick

Man, I would love to come and look at your set up Mick.....next time I'm in the US I'll give my best shot.
Thankyou, you answered my question with more gold. You have worked hard to be in the fortunate position to "live" your character outside of your performance setting.....its almost like there is a perfect merging of Mick Ayres and the character you portray and I only know of 2 performers who do that....YOU and your esteemed interviewer on the broadcast.....the right honourable JC (G'day Jim ) Kam

A few people have asked about the forum and or were it went.
It was taken down because of spammers and since other mentalism boards are up and doing well there was no reason for it. I will leave the video clips from MindVention up on Vimeo for another week and then they will be pulled. (Started deleting the clips, then thought a few might not have seen them so a few are still online). Be that as it may the podcasts will remain posted. We are working on a new one with Mark Salem. When new episodes are ready the links will be posted here. Best Wishes, J ack H.O.A-X

Hey Jim,
I just tried to watch the video, but it says I'm not allowed access. Did you already delete it? I remember our afternoon together fondly and have felt sad we lost touch. Would love to reconnect sometime. I think you'd love the new project I'm doing. Bill |
