OMG!
I did use Ammar wax till now and cause I just now started tieing my IET with wax I do use more of it. I would like some with the same stickyness also wich is not melting this early. In summer Ammars wax is too soft. So I looked for an alternative and found this post. My problem is... Many good Ideas BUT.... Anyone tried more than 1 of these ideas and can compare the stickyness / melting of these recipes (maybe in comparision with Ammars wax)? |

The cheapest wax is Sex Wax (no wait, let me finish!)this is as already mentioned, surf wax, cheap and very good. The best wax of the lot is Baby Bel, this is the little red wax coated cheese found in supermarkets all around the world. The good and the bad - you can buy this on the way to a gig and it works brilliantly - bad, it is red an WILL leave a red mark on the ceiling. There is also a wax which can be found in candle shops which when applied to the bottom of a candle will secure the candle to its holder, this stuff is too sticky on its own but mixed with a harder wax will produce excellent results. Hope this helps. Gary Jones.

I've been using the candle holder wax for years. Its called Tacky Wax. No need to mix it and its very inexpensive.

The toilet ring wax can be used by itself, but it's VERY soft, making it messy to carry around and deal with. I like the idea of mixing it with bees wax and paraffin, just be REALLY careful when melting paraffin, it gives off a highly inflammable vapor which can flash over in a blink.

In a pinch I tend to use dental wax (the kind they give you when you have braces). You can buy it at the supermarket for about 80 cents.

big jars at Home Depot for only $8. Soft, sticky, meant to hold stuff down during an earthquake.

Many Ideas but I look for someone who has tested more than one and can tell me pro/contra of any.
I yesterday went out to look for myself.... Must menton I live in Germany. a) The Toiletring sounds really good BUT we don't have any in Germany How sticky and soft is this in comparision to the Ammar wax? Maybe I could order me some rings in the US and I could then mix it with bee's wax to get the right consistency / stickyness? BTW.... WHAT THE HELL IS "Sex wax"? I do this without any wax b) The hair removal wax I found was a slow flowing liquid and I was told they all are this way... (is this right or did I just ge the wrong one?) c) Dental wax is only available at the dentist (probably small doses and expensive) so this was out too. d) Bee's wax was too hard on itself e)Candle stickers (Tacky wax) is the right consistency but much less sticky than the Ammar wax (maybe I got the cheap version?). Conclusion... Much time spend not any similar to the Ammar wax found. I would stick (lol!) with it but it is too soft for threadwork in warm temperatures. Maybe there is a soft and hard version aroung? I got the one in a white round plastic container. |

Come on.... What is it?
So I talked to a chemist about this issue to get the perfect magic wax and he offered me a new perspective. I must do some tests with the samples he will send me but if they hold what he assured me I probably will market this mixture. Will see. |

Just wanted to ask how you guys go about applying the wax to the back of the card. I have been using the a little container that holds the rubber bands for a while now. I also tried behind the end of the belt and also the felt tip pen cap. If I am working restaurants I will load it underneath the table edge to get ahead too!

I posted my thoughts regarding the Card On The Ceiling on the Perverse Magic thread of the Genii Forum back on March 7, 2004 but I'll note some thoughts here.
1 I am conscious of the ceiling and don't want to ruin it as wax may and I use scotch tape as suggested by Bruce Elliott in Classic Secrets of Magic (page 8) 2 I have the tape folded into a ring with the sticky side out. The card is controlled to the top and I pick up the ring so it is loosly over my middle finger. I put the back face up on the hand with the tape and then slide my finger out. 3 When I toss the deck it is held by the narrow sides between my thumb and middle finger and the ahd twists (to make a better contact with the ceiling) as my hand tosses the deck straight up. 4 I don't believe in putting a rubber band around the deck. It's more dramatic for the cards to scatter. 5 And finally - it's POSSIBLE that the card won't stick and you MUST have an out. I always force a card and have a duplicate somewhere (once I planted it in a spectator's pocket) though I never had to use that duplicate. |

Just went to the local surf shop and got some of their softwest sex wax which is a green label 3X: cold water - soft.
Aparently the ones for warmer climates are much harder. I have to say this one worked really well just tried it out and the card has stuck quite nicely to the ceiling. Its a cheap alternative as its around the $5 mark here in Australia. |

Hey Guys, I know this is an old thread, but for anyone who is interested, we are now doing a range of custom colored card on ceiling wax.
We have Sharpie Grey for those who hide the wax on their Sharpie, we have Sharpie Black for those who hide it on their Sharpie lid or on their belt. We have Bicycle Blue and Red for those who don't hide the wax in plain sight, but want it to be less visible to an accidental flash on the card. All colors have been thoroughly texted to make sure they will not stain a ceiling. They come in 3 sizes too, 15g, 30g and 50g. As a guide, the standard Michael Ammar tub contains around 35g. You can view the range here: http://www.propdog.co.uk/accessories/putty-waxes Dave Bonsall http://www.propdog.co.uk |
