WOW!! So talk about a huge kick to the groin. I go into work today to sign my new orders. This was another guaranteed year of employment with the Oregon Military Department. They told me two things......Congratulations on the baby! (my wife an I welcomed a baby girl into the world a week ago), and then.........The federal government froze all of our assets and didn't approve our budget so you are going to be laid off. At least they waited until the last minute and did it without warning ;-)
Oddly enough, less than one hour later I booked a very high dollar show in Ontario Canada for a hockey team in November. I then confirmed two big illusion shows in Vancouver WA for the 23rd of this month. I'm not sure if that is a sign or not, but I am now forced to at least try the magic route full time. (I will still work for the National Guard part time) I am open to any and all advice! |

That is very unusual for the military, you usually always know when what is coming down the pike. Guess they want to run the army like American business, that is always the way it is, out of the blue they close the doors.
I think it is higher power telling you that you should take advantage of the AGT appearance. With that exposure, you have the opportunity to kick off a magic career. At least with you in control there is no surprises, if you fail, you know it was your fault and not because someone is trying to save a buck at your expense. Wish you and your family all the best. I know you can do it, just work hard and stay focused on your goal. |

Congratulations on the gigs,
and your at least partial recovery from the blow! The trick (no pun) is to keep the momentum going-- once you’re going down the road keep you energy and optimism flowing. Now, in my opinion (after thirty years of highs and lows) is to keep improving your offering about 25%, increase the quality of your customer service 15%, Then spend at least 60% of your time learning more about how to run a small business (don’t, I repeat, don’t buy a specialized magic marketing course now) treat your business as any small service business (plumber, accountant, lawyer, caterer). Beef up your marketing and promotional knowledge, read, read, read (PM me and I’ll suggest maybe six books I consider CRUCIAL and PRACTICAL). Treat this as a full-time job, plan for and expect a 50 our work week. Get your family involved-- they can learn how to place polite and effective cold calls, follow up calls, send promotional materials, handle questions and bookings. Be certain that your show(s) can live up to your marketing promises. Be sure your website, brochures, DVD, cards reflect WHY and HOW you are different and unique and are of very high and classy quality (this is one place to spend money!!!) Always give more of yourself, and more value, than you promise. Don’t under price yourself, but don’t do an ego trip and ask for the moon. Expect some lean times as you learn and plan, then as things go up, still expect highs and lows on the flow. Don’t try to be “all things to all people” decide what you do best and uniquely and stick to that. Let me know if I can be of help on your journey! My two-cents. Magically, Walt |

Of any time this may be a good time to get into it. You have the lucrative holiday season coming up, and a "name" (AGT) going for you. Really try to capitalise on that. Look towards fairs with the illusions, as an opening act??? Some fairs use some big names. You do have a good back story.

Congratulations on your baby! That's a rough time to be getting a pink slip, though. Best of luck. At least you'll have more time to enjoy the baby.
Now appearing nightly in my basement.
