I understand That the Centavo coins are supposed to be copper but trust me I do not use mine enough (between ft job, school ) to wear it out. Also I looked around for Centavos as per previous post here and even though I found them reasonably priced I did find one gaffer selling "copper Centavos" for $95.00 could there be that much difference?

My CSB is about 15 years old and looks great. Though it has been shelved mostly for the past 10 years. I bought an Eddie Gibson version and have never been happier. Cheaper than a lassen/schoolcraft set, it has served me well.

Okay, saysold, this is wierd.
I pulled my Johnson CSB back out to check the relief. I took the copper Centavo (the regular one) outside to get a good look in daylight. It looked like copper plating had rubbed off and I could see kind of a silver color underneath! I took the coin inside and cleaned it with a good metal polish (Weiman) and low and behold, it shined up pure shiney copper! It's as though the tarnish on the coin created the illusion of silver/gray portions showing through the copper, when I guess in fact it was the "high" points of the relief (like the edges of your friend's coin) were actually shinier than the tarnished sections, so it looked like the copper "plating" had worn off. I know your friend has other issues with his g*ff, but I would be interested in hearing what the centavo side of the g*ff looks like with a good polishing. Sammy

Chemical reaction between the different metals can cause things like that to happen.
They will look bad until you polish them. That being said though I looked at my two copper and one silver set and the CSB set from Jonson Products and it is interesting how the two gaffs are made. There should be no reaction on the CSB because the inside of the gaff is Copper. It appears that they take two coins to make it along with the insert. Mike |

Sammy- OK just tried the Weiman polish...
The Centavo coins (ga** and regular) are now shinier but the gray area at the Ga** are still visible to the eye and a magnifying glass. Great idea though, but no dice. One thing that we also see though is that the depth of the relief is unquestionably much deeper and richer in the older CSB and if you like I will post a side by side photo tomorrow here so you guys can see the differences. Again I am not knocking Johnson but to my mind something has changed - the coins being used, possibly the quality of manufacturing or QC before shipping... something. All may be clearer when we chat with Kathy @ Johnson this week and ask some detailed questions. My friend Roland will have to return the set anyway because of the dimpled inside section of the g*** coin since the coin is not flush and won't seat properly (wobbles). Thanks to all for their input and suggestions!

Oh well, worth a try!
I'd like to see a side by side photo. My centavo seems to have more relief than your friends, looking at the photo. Mine is a 1966 vintage. I wish there were more brick and mortar shops around. Then you could look before you buy.

I have noticed that some companies use 20 Centavo coins that have "Copia" (copy in Spanish) engraved on them. These are definitely cheap knockoffs. The old coins were replaced I believe in the '90s...I have a JOPRO Scotch n' Soda set bought in the '70s that uses 20 Centavo coins minted in '66.
BTW, I recently purchased a Hopping Half (silver liberty) set and have no issues with the s****s being too loose...I have numerous JOPRO products many purchased in the '70s and they still look great! Cardamagically, Dom

Saysold1, just got the tango CSB and for the money you can't beat the price! The coins, so to speak, go together really well . I originally bought them for Michael Afshins international three fly. I was told that a piece from the hopping half set will fit the CSB set but alas, it is just a hair too big. Not sure why but it seems to just be the way it is. Now I am faced with most likely having to get it altered. Anyway, the set is great. Only thing I don't like is the centavo looks fake (soooo bright!) and the chinese coin has a lot of relief to it which tends to get caught if trying to slide sometimes. Kinda like the (I believe) Ton Onasaka chinese coins which are completely smooth. Anyway, in general its a nice set. Could you get a better set? Sure if you get it made for you, like I presume Jeremy Pei's was (he had a nice chinese coin gaff and walking liberty). But for what I paid, you cant beat Tango's quality. Very satisfied with the coins. PM me if you have any other specifics!
-Ben I just re-read that first sentence..its supposed to be for the money you can't beat em! Haha long days at two jobs will do this to ya... -Ben |

My friend Roland spoke with someone named "Sam" who said he was the owner of Johnson coins, and here is what transpired.
Sam said there was a real shortage of 20 Centavo coins and what Johnson can locate, especially the older ones. What they are doing is trying to locate as many as they can, and they are trying to tumble - clean - polish and restore as best they can. He said that at the areas where the finish appears to be missing or plated, that he suspects that it may be solder which is because two coins are soldered together - which might also be the seating issue that the two coins were not soldered together correctly. He said they do not use replica coins... Sam sounded frustrated that he had heard similar comments from other people who have called in - that the challenges they are dealing with in locating coins have affected their ability to maintain standards. He said that he would happily take care of everything and want us 100% satisfied - no hesitation. He said to send it back to the attention of Kathy and she would send a new set - requesting the whole set back. So that is the story folks... One other interesting side note is that Sam said Johnson hasn't been able to find a similar coin in size to replace the 20 Centavo.

Well the customer service is great and that's a good thing. Now for the question I asked a while back. I have seen copper Centavo's advertised for 95 dollars could these be the ones in sort supply?

Probably Father. Since I have had those issues I find I rather use my Johnson Ultimate C/S it is a Scotch and Soda using an English Penny.

Father:
All I know if the Sam (the owner at Johnson) said that there were having a heck of a time locating 20 Centavo coins for their coin gaffs and it was a problem/challenge for them. I thought it was interesting that he said that they could not come up with another coin to easily substitute for the 20 Centavo. I guess they will have to figure something out at some point.

My guess is the mexican government with copper prices being so high, reclaimed them and sold them for scrap copper at a profit. But 95 dollars is just too high. Don't worry, Scotch and Soda is a popular trick, one sold a lot at pitch shops, they will come up with something.

I don't think the Scotch and Soda was the issue - it was more an issue for the Silver Copper Brass I think.

The seller was "niceastuff". Those are the only reasons I can think of that a 20 centavos would be $95.00. I have about 10 of them. Maybe I should put them on ebay! Sammy

Anthony,
OK, I looked on ebay and it seems that some people are looking for big bucks for older rare 20 centavos. That would be reason number 4 why one could cost $95.00. As magicians, we don't need those. I saw some reasonably priced ones as well. If you have a coin shop close (which you shoud in NY), I would check there first.
