I saw an ad for a Criss Angel magic kit. It wasn't real impressive but during it they said that Angel was awarded "Magician of the Century". What century? He didn't do anything to warrant it last century and it is only ten years into this century and he really hasn't earned it this century either. Who gave him this award if at all and what was it based on?

Criss was presented with the "Merlin" under the title of "magician of the century" in April of this year.
That said, you might be interested in looking at the site that Tm Ellis has put up discussing his opinions on the validity of the "Merlin" as a real award here: http://merlinawards.wordpress.com/ |

So he is the greatest magician of THIS century? Well, I guess everyone else should just give up.

Heh.. I think that the validity of this award is in question such that it means very little at this time.

Criss in 'Magician of the Century', Siegfried & Roy are 'Magicians of the Century', David Copperfield is 'Magician of the Century'.
All awards given out by the same organisation in the last ten years.

Around $30. It is the platinum set or something like that. When they list the 'tricks' they include the french drop and things like that. The fun part was the people on the commercial were doing terrible jobs presenting the tricks.
Here is the commercial, and it really is a commercial that ran on TV. I say that because it is really bad. http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/201......s_a.html |

I love the acting. Academy Award winning stuff. But, seriously... what's your hurry? One could not focus on one trick except the floating paper. The other tricks went by so fast, I couldn't tell if he was doing magic. It just looked like he poured salt from his fist.
Magic is like a joke. You have to have the setup. If you just tell a punchline, it's not funny. Magic is the same way. Just the effect doesn't work without the setup. The magic is the punchline. |

We as magicians have our own thoughts about Criss Angel, the public who sees him, loves him, finds him entertaining, and he must be getting decent ratings because he is still on TV.
Who else is dominating the TV business? Ask any kid...Cooperfield who? Whether we like it or not, TV determines "who is who' in our business. This is a new century and right now, who is on top? Criss Angel Don't like it, then get your own TV station. (It is possible)

The fact that Angel is still on television is not a big deal. He is on cable and keeps himself on it. He might as well be on Youtube. Copperfield use to be on network TV where if you don't pull high ratings, you don't get called back. How many yearly specials did Copperfield do?

It's so exclusive and prestigious that no other magician has ever heard of it, let alone won it! Anyone who wants to enter their names for the next Mandrake will now have to wait 990 years until the next millennium for their chance. But since I will judge that one too, I stand a good chance of winning the second round of the Mandrakes too!

It's who can get sponsors. Please don't misunderstand me. I'm not commenting on the quality of Criss' act. I'm merely stating something that you apparently do not understand. It's not audience appeal that necessarily gets you a television series, although that helps. It's sponsors. Mark Wilson will gladly tell you that he couldn't get his first television show until he got a sponsor. He got his first network special the same way. He got a sponsor. Basically, Mark went out, pounded the pavement, and convinced the folks in Texas that they could profit from having him do a series of television shows. The same thing happened when he got his network shows. When Mark walked into the television studios in Hollywood the first time and approached them about a television special, they showed him the door. When he went in the next time, with sponsors, the showed him the glad hand and set up the time slots. If Criss wants to really impress the magical public, he should try getting a "real" network show, instead of some cable spot.

There can only be one winner every 1,000 years! This shall not stand! I demand satisfaction! I challenge you to DLs at 10 paces! Choose your weapon: The Mandrake Award for Magician of the Millennium is too important to let this injustice stand. And since a millennium is 10 times longer than a century, it is by very definition 10 times better than "Magician of the Century."
