Okay, I'm showing my age here, but remember that running gag on "Bullwinkle" where he keeps trying to pull a rabbit out of his hat but always ends up with a ferocious animal of some sort?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRW7pITY5Cg I bet kids would LOVE a running gag like that in a magic show. Anyone have any theories on how to pull it off, or seen anything on the market which is similar?
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

I do this in my magic so, sort of. I keep trying to produce a wonderful mystical magical rabbit. The first try I get a dove, the second try I get a large bearded dragon lizard and the end of the show I produce the rabbit. The kids love it and enjoy touching the animals after the show under my supervision of course.

Announce you will produce a bunny, but small teddy bear comes out. "Oh this is the bunny's teddy bear. he always sleeps with his teddy bear." Next comes a toothbrush, then you might get a carrot, etc etc etc until you get to the end of your show and produce the bunny. my name is wes holly and I approved this post |

In my version of this gag I first announce I will take an elephant from the hat -- then pretend to misuderstand the invitable "No ways" as the kids not wanting to see the trick and I put the hat away. Each time the hat comes out I settle for a smaller animal(rinosaurous, bear, gorilla, dog, small dog), but each time pretend to hear the audience saying they don't want to see it, though by then of course they're being very unambiguous that they want to see me do the trick.
Finally, of course we do the rabbit. After all that repetition, ringing in the rabbit is very easy, which is what led to the running gag idea in the first place. But now I suspect I did get the idea from Bullwinkle. marc charisse |

Hank Morehouse used to use a gag bag and was going to pull a dog out and instead pulled out the the collar, then the leash, then something else and finally a balloon and made a dog.
I saw him do this in the 2nd lecture I ever saw in 1975 and it got great laughs from the kids.

A couple years ago I had a running gag in one of my shows where I would claim to be able to produce a black Panther. Of course the kids would disagree with me especially when they saw the size of the mirror box in front of me. I eventually produced the "panther" which was a tiny black kitten. The kids were not only delighted but believed me when I said I had to shrink it to be able to produce it from the box.
Please note: This was a large stage show and not a birthday party as it would have been too difficult to hide the kitten until show time. Using a kitten also has a disadvantage of course, as it soon outgrew the box and retired to a life of luxery in my home. Still, it was fun and speaking with folks that were at the show a few years later they all brought up the Black Panther routine as being memorable. |

Lol Mark!
So true, and I mentioned on another post, soon my neighbors will be talking about me in whispers and talk of burning me at the stake. |
