Andrew, I am so very sorry to hear this news. As you said, she is in a better place now. Her new journey has just begun, and I'm sure that thought alone will eventually bring you peace and comfort. Let her passing be an affirmation of who you are. You are her legacy.

Thank you again everyone - it means a lot. As a friend of mine said this morning, she beat cancer by fully embracing what she knew would be waiting for her on the other side.

Thank you all! We had a beautiful service for her on Sunday - she wanted a party, not a funeral. Lots of bright colors, balloons and laughter. It was a good time and I had fun sharing stories from over the years. I somehow managed to get applause at the end of my presentation - I haven't been to many memorial services so I don't know what the protocol normally is, but I'm told that applause isn't exactly standard.
Anyway, it was a celebration fitting of her personality, and we were thrilled to see hundred of people fill our church to celebrate her life. Again, thank you for the prayers...we ask for continued prayers of support for us and we move through this. My dad is struggling and really doesn't want to be alone in the house much, so I'm doing the best I can to hold him up.

My wife too died of cancer in hospice last month July 17th) under practically the same circumstances and manner as your mother. I wish that I had seen this thread earlier so that I could have hopefully provided a modicum of comfort and support to you during this very difficult period. You are correct. Cancer is a terrible disease and to helplessly watch a loved one progressively deteriorate physically is excruciating. From your posts it is obvious that your mother was a beautiful person and was spiritually strong and positive and that the cancer never succeeded in turning her away from her positive and strong inner self. You must be very proud of her. You and I are both contemporaneously going through this "recovering" journey. Please feel free to PM me if you feel that it might be beneficial and might provide mutual insight(s) and support. Best, Mike P.S. I would also respectfully suggest that you see if your mother's hospice center provides any grief counseling services or programs to family members. If they do, you might what to see what such entails. I know that my wife's hospice center does provide such counseling for 13 months and that they just recently sent me a packet describing such services...including group meetings and other resources, etc. My son and I are both intending to take advantage of these services...at least to the extent of checking them out and seeing if they provide coping skills and/or otherwise "help" in ways that we presently don't understand or are able to contemplate.

I can understand exactly what you're feeling, Andrew. And I also know there are no words. So I'll just sit here and mentally rest my hand on your shoulder and pray.

Thank you all so much for the continued support! It has truly been a blessing, and the positive thoughts and prayers are a wonderful gift from all of you here at the Café that have chimed in.
It's hard to hear how many people out there have gone through similar experiences...in the moment, you feel like you're all alone, when in reality there are thousands and thousands of people on the same journey. They seem to come out of the wood work when these things happen. It's difficult knowing this happens to so many people, yet comforting to know I'm not the only one going through it all. You're a good group and I appreciate all the support - keep it coming! While we'll be attending grief counseling and taking advantage of whatever else hospice and our church has to offer, it's nice to hear a kind word or two from my fellow magicians too!

Andrew, I just came across this thread. I was reading the whole progression and was really expecting a happy ending. I am just stunned right now, and am deeply sorry for yours and your family's loss. Your mother sounded like a true fighter. Your unwaivering support to her in her time of need shows just how great of a son you are to her.
