Hi,

I've got an El Duco Card Sword. The elastic is worn out and I'm looking for a replacement(s). I have contacted El Duco and a few other dealers. So far I have had no luck. Does anyone know where to get it? It is NOT braided elastic, or nylon covered rubber cord, etc.. It is a cord that appears to be pure rubber(?), and one piece, not woven. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I do not know if this would work but possibly you could get some surgical tubing and split it with a razor blade. I know it has amazing stretch possibilities as we use for pole vaulting as a warm up bar. I have seen it stretch over 10 feet and bounce back to be taught between the uprights.

Here is one link I found for a variety of colors from 3/32" to 3/4". I can think of lots of other uses for this tubing in magic.

Not anymore but I did years ago. I have been a track official for 30 years. I work a lot doing meets at Akron University. The vaulters have become my kids. I had two kids that that were Indoor and outdoor americans last year. I really enjoy the sport have for years.

Richard,

My daughter started vaulting a week before Christmas 2009, and in May she won State, and tied the state record. In July, she placed third at the Nike Track Nationals in Eugene, OR.

You ever work with Earl Bell?

Not yet. The one guy I work with does the Milrose Games and lot of the big meets.

Last year at our indoor state meet, we had two jr. twin brothers jumping 16' consistently. I don't remember the exact best. Their brother is a senior this year and jumps 17' 6". I told him he better graduate soon before his brothers catch him. Can you imagine the family outings? "Let's go in the backyard put the bar at 16' and jump a little before dinner".

The Akron kids used to go to the Reno PV invitational in January a lot. Two years ago, our girl vaulter, Carrie Kayes, won it.

What is your daughter PR? Did she have gymnastic background? That is incredible to pick it up that fast. Congradulations.

Her "official" outdoor PR is 10', although she has cleared 10'-9" in practice. She was a gymnast for almost 5 years, but didn't want to go from 12 to 20 hours per week of practice.

We also had twin brothers who placed 1st and 3rd at State.

You need to meet Earl Bell, and he isn't that long a drive from you (Jonesboro, AR). His dad is 84, and still jumps 8 feet...

We ran the Big East meet two years ago. There was a local gentleman that still held the record there from the 40's. He still jumps 14' in his 80's. He was supposed to go to the olympics but always ended up hurting something by landing in the sawdust.

Ten foot is pretty good. I think our girls state record (there are three divisions) is around 13 feet.

Gymnastics is a hard sport on the body. At least with track she can get a scholarship and education.

Richard

BTW..The rest of guys have to be wondering what the heck we are talking about since this started talking about a card sword and elastic.

We used to build giant water balloon slingshots in college with two 2x4s nailed in an X and surgical tubing for the elastic.

Its is a very stretchable and VERY powerful elastic Smile

Boy, I am glad I did not purchase the El Duco Card Sword, I was once very close at purchaseing one at a magic convention once. To find out they do not provide the gimmick is really shocking as El Duco had such a good reputation.

Put them on my not to trust Dealer list.

Thanks for your input everyone.

Cyberqat, I'm not sure if that rubber stretches and contracts like the original rubber gimmick does. It does appear to stretch and contract like surgical tubing. However it is not hollow like a tube. It is solid like a cord.

Although I was hoping that someone would know where to get it, I may end up trying to slice the surgical tubing as Richard suggested.

Thanks ClintonMagus,

I believe that the rubber cord for jewelry making does not stretch and contract enough. I looked at some at Hobby Lobby, and I believe that it is the same stuff as in the link you provided.

I'm surprised that someone here doesn't know where to get it, as there are other manufacturers that make Card Swords too. I'm not sure what exactly the other manufacturers cords are made of as I haven't looked at them up close.

The cord that I have appears to be silicone, as it looks like, feels like, and stretches and contracts like silicon. It measures 3/16" across its diameter. Again, it is solid, and not a tube.

I may end up taking Richards suggestion and splitting a silicone tube. However I'd like to save that as a last resort.

I'm still searching, and any help is greatly appreciated.

Magically,
John

John, I can tell you I have a cards sword and seen English Card swords and owned a P&L Card Sword once, handled Abbott's and all of them use a black fabric/nylon wrapped elastic band. It is about 1/8" to 3/16" in dia. I think this is just to strong for the El Duco thin blade.

Abbott's will sell you their elastic for a few dollars and you see if it will work. Also Stevens Magic sells the Lipan Card Sword that uses a different elastic then the traditional elastic. You may also might want to contact Stevens and see if you can purchase the Lipan elastic. They now sell the elastic for this sword. What it is like exactly I don't know, but when someone was looking several years ago, they said it was not the nylon wrapped heavy elastic. Then Stevens made arrangements to sell replacement elastic.

I am 99% sure that the Elduco card sword I handled had pole elastic on it. It's a good choice because it's core is self lubricating. Having said that wmhegbli is on the money, my Camtryx sword had thick tubular sewing elastic with a woven outer and that lasted years.
