I want to replace the black kevlar line that came with this industrial key reel with a white nylon cord of the same gauge:
http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/KEYBAK-Key-Reel-1PGP7 Having never even opened a reel before, I'm a bit nervous. Any tips and advice from you who are more mechanically-inclined would be very much appreciated. |

Donal,
This not for the timid. The first problem is how the case is sealed. If there is a screw to close it you are lucky. As you take the lid off, you will see the spring wound around a central shaft. Keep your thumb on the spring so it does not flip off or out of the case. If that happens, you will have a major job resetting the spring. Now find out where the string is attached to the central takeup drum. You will take that line off and attached your new line. Thread the line through the side opening in the case and wrap it around the drum. You wind it as close as you can. If you pull out on the line a bit as you wind, it will put a little tension on the line and wind the line up tight around the drum. You should be a small piece of rubber tubing over the line and then tie on your connector. The tubing acts as a shock adsorber. Hope that helps. Richard. PS. I am send you an regular email on the other project. Richard.

Thanks, Richard. The two halves of the reel are held together via four screws, so at least step will be easy.
Thanks again--I'll let you know how it goes. |

Here is the reel that is used to convert for magic purposes. The large black one, it says it goes 48", how about that!
http://www.keybak.com/imgs/c-imgs/catalogp0007.jpg Key-Bak also has one with a chain for keys, Sterling Magic used this reel for the ring to key case they use to make. They installed a locking device. This is also the one Petrick and Mia used to sell, as well as Jay Scott Berry uses several in his act, and sold them years ago. |
