Yesterday was the bestest day ever. Not talking about the WBC thing, though I certainly wasn't letting that ruin my day.
I go to the park every afternoon for a couple of hours. This isn't a small park with just a playground and parking lot. It's an arboretum, and it's huge. There's all of these wooded areas in the back with footbridges over waterfalls and lots of cool stuff like that.
I go there to study and practice kung fu and taiji. I often bring my guitar as well.
So yesterday I was out at one of the waterfalls doing my moving meditation stuff on the bridge. That got me feeling pretty good, as it usually does.
When I was done I walked up this set of log steps to the trail back down to the park entrance. As I'm walking back down I round a corner and come face to face with a young buck (deer.)
We stared at each other for what seemed a long time. Then he went behind some trees where I couldn't see him, and a couple of seconds later he crosses back in front of me with his family! It was so awesome!
I was jazzed for the rest of the day.

Very cool that he felt safe enough to cross with his family. I guess he wasn't afraid of a fellow critter. I never realized deer traveled in family groups.

Mama and the babies: frequently; papa, too: almost never.

Cool story!

One thing, don't get too close cuz a deer can kill or injure you, not in that order usually.

That was a nice story and upon reading it , one gets the impression that the deer had the impression that you meant him and his family no harm. He trusted you. That's a powerful feeling to get from an animal!

If you would have been only a few seconds earlier you would have passed the buck.

It is always an honour to come face to face with the various Lords of the Forest. Thanks for the story.

That's true, one good kick with that dew claw is like a sloppy surgeon, but I also got the feeling from him that he didn't mean me any harm either.

That was not a buck and his family. It was a buck and his harum. This is mating season, and you were disturbing an intimate moment, which around here is directly followed by hunting season. The only time of year that the doe want anyting to do with the buck is during mating season. The rest of the year groups of deer are all female. Pretty soon those deer, especially the bucks will be in hiding. There is also a plethora of road kill during these two times of year, because the deer get very excited from both the mating, and from the hunting.

I hope that my post is not too graphic.

Al, unlike those slutty godless deer in Pennsylvania the deer in Washington are family deer with one wife and their little deers.

Lets at least get our termonology streight. The pappa is called the buck, the mama is called the doe, and the baby deer is called the fawn. Didn't you ever see bambi? I know that you live near Reno, and there are a lot of girls in Reno named Bambi, and Fawn, so don't get those naughty girls confused with the baby deer.

It is kinda like sister wives, but in this case all of the sisters want to mate at the same time, and according to Santa it only happens like that with trampy Pennsylvania doe.
