My gawd! Sweden is Utah!
Sweden is two companies....Ericsson Electronica and Saab....the rest of the country exist because of them. Remember, Swedish women have the smallest chests of all countries but make up with it with great faces and behinds. |

Woland, I don't know. I don't know if what you are even saying is true. But it is clearly not because of rationing. Probably it has to do with cross border shopping, much as Americans / Mexicans and Canadians / Americans cross border shop, taking advantage of local arbitrage opportunities. Or the same way many Europeans regularly travel from their own EU country to another for vacationing.
According to the CIA World Factbook, Sweden is the 21st most visited country in the world, with 7,627,000 arrivals in 2006. Which, for its small size, is incredible. Maybe Swedes leave their own country for vacation, because they hate being overrun by tourists in their own country. Sweden's population is under 8 million. On a per capita basis, the United States receives only about 1/6 to 1/5 as many tourists as Sweden does. Why have you this apparently visceral hatred of all things to do with Sweden? I can understand you may not approve of all of Sweden's policies or society, fair enough, but why are you repeating obvious falsehoods? Please, do some fact checking.

Balducci, every Summer everyone in Europe gets up and shifts one country over for vacation. It is a pain but you learn to deal with them.

So, where's the study and the thread asking Canadians what they think of Canada's wealth distribution as compared to Sweden's?

Are we still discussing the "wealth" distribution in sweden? I thought this study was all but debunked by their own admission that they did not use "wealth" for sweden's numbers, and admitted that the wealth distribution there is also "extremely top heavy."
They admitted that the numbers did not represent their cause so they just used different numbers. And people say the sites I cite cherry pick data.

So, in other words, all else being equal, 92% of the people prefer a wealth distribution that is actually even MORE uniform than that found in Sweden. Lobo asked about Canada. From a 2006 study in Canada: "While at face value, the inequality in wealth in Canada may appear striking, when compared to other countries, Canada is well within the international norm. A recent international study showed that the wealthiest 10% of Canada’s owned 53% of total wealth, which is fractionally above the median of the 20 countries considered. By comparison, in the United States the wealthiest 10% of the population holds 69.8% of total wealth and in Switzerland, the share stands at 71.3%." http://www.td.com/economics/special/dt1206_wealth.jsp

Do you mean in terms of wealth distribution and a random placement of my own circumstances therein (like in the study question)? In that case, I would prefer a more equitable distribution, sure. Call me risk averse. Or conservative. Do you mean my ideal? I would like a reasonable minimum guaranteed wealth level (or guaranteed minimum income possibly something like what your Founding Father Thomas Paine advocated) for everyone, and beyond that I wouldn't care what the distribution looked like.

I'm a little concerned what you mean by 'wealth distribution'. Are there those that think that money will or should be taken from the wealthy and given to those with less? I agree that this should be done to wealthy socialist who if retaining more money than the median income are full of it unless they give it all away to others to elevate them but in general I have issues with it. I have more of an issue with the disparing difference in pay between people who work for companies. I knew execs who did NOTHING to contribute to the daily success of the company while others who did contribute directly to customer satisfaction and increasing business were not even given perm position (legal in Mass to keep people as temps, not in California, for years). There are some people, of course, worth a lot of money, inventing engineers for example, who come up with the products that the company sales for example. I knew guys who basically attended meetings and relied on others to do all the work who made millions over time with options and bonus pay outs while the ones who did the real work were living pay check to pay check. They could have paid everyone in the company a few grand more a year without it effecting the bonus program for the top guys by one percent. Sad.
I do not advocate taking what they have now back and spreading it around though, smacks of 1917. |

Santa, no one here is talking about "redistribution" of wealth. At least, I'm not.
