Manna from heaven was a total diet supliment, and anything else is just all natural. I have eaten fresh kill turkeys that were rather tasty. I have never eaten a fried turkey, but I'd love to try it.

Gaddy is right. They pack the birds too closely and their treatment isn't good. They need to treat the animals better and give them some room, they are living creatures after all.

I don't have any inside info on Turkeys specifically, but it should also be pointed out that when you get something cheap, or at a particularly "reasonable" price someone somewhere is paying for it. Often times the smaller organic and free range companies are not charging outrageous fees, they are just charging more realistic fees that don't involve being cruel to animals or exploiting other humans.
NOW, that being said, ...deep fried Turkey is amazing and you should try it. It is not at all greasy like you might expect it to be, most of the oil goes right back in the pot, but it is incredibly juicy and tender. If I wasn't stuck home today with bronchitis I would be at the store getting some (organic ,free range) to fry up!

I prefer to throw caution to the wind when deep frying...and by that I mean throw the turkey into the fryer from the 2 point line. Make a game of it. It's all the more rewarding.
Sigh...I'm going to miss Thanksgiving, being in the UK this year.

One of Dr. Herzog’s most interesting forays into the world of animal love/hate is his exploration of cockfighting – a blood sport in which two roosters are fitted with sharp metal blades and pitted against one another in a fight to the death, for the amusement and wagering purposes of spectators. Sounds horrible, which is why it’s illegal throughout the U.S. and Canada. Dr. Herzog, who teaches at Western Carolina University in North Carolina, spent time with cockfighters and was struck by their proclamations of love for the animals. While not won over to the notion of cockfighting as a noble sport, he contrasted the life of a fighting rooster to that of the average broiler chicken. The gamecock gets to run around outside, chase hens, enjoy fresh air, eat a nice diet and generally get pampered for about two years before either killing or being killed in a dirt pen one Saturday night. The future McNugget lives for 42 days without ever seeing sun or sky, often lying in its own excrement, eating processed poultry chow, before being stuffed into a crate and carted to the slaughterhouse. If you were reincarnated as a chicken, which would you rather be?

A fighting bird! Not far from SF is where they have lots of poultry and those guys are outside but don't look they can move very well. Did you know a big turkey is like four months old when they are done? That is a lot of growth.
Note: I saw a cockfight in Panama and it freaked me out. |

I'm a big fan of Tofurkey.
I don't usually get and actual stuffed Tofurkey on Thanksgiving, but the same company makes very good vegetarian cold cuts. Here's my recipe for the ultimate Tofurkey sandwich: -Acme herb slab (it's a kind of bread) -Pesto and sun-dried tomato spread (either or both; anything other than mayo. Yuck!) -Tofurkey slices (I'm partial to the peppered, but italian deli style is very good to) -slices of your favorite cheese. -(optional) baby spinach

I keep seeing there pizzas, but I've had bad experiences with fake cheese in the past so I haven't got one yet.

BTW, is it weird when the ducks start following you around, looking for scraps from your turkey leg?

They're pretty much the current state of the art, and more and more vegan restaurants and product makers are adopting them (stretchy Teese cheese was pretty good, too, but it was no Daiya). So if you've been avoiding vegan products with fake cheese, see if you can find something that uses Daiya...it was a pretty big leap forward.

Tofu "ground beef" is excellent on pizza; I love it. I made a lasagne with it on the weekend, but wasn't too thrilled with the results. I need to find a way to make things just a bit moister, without making it oily. Any suggestions?

Another company with great vegan products available in the supermarket is Gardein. They have a wide and growing variety of products; I'm currently hooked on their chicken scallopini. For a great meatball sandwich: From the top, mostly hollow out a sandwich roll (canoe-style) Heat up about 4-5 Nate's Meatless Meatballs (http://www.cosmosveganshoppe.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=NMBS) on low-medium heat in a saucepan with your favorite pasta sauce. I've been on a Buitoni's arrabbiata sauce. About 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. When you've got about 4 minutes left on the meatballs, throw the sandwich roll in a toaster oven. When the meatballs & sauce are done, pull the roll out of the toaster oven. I usually quarter the meatballs at this point, but depending on how big your mouth is, you're on your own there. Fill up the roll with the sauce and meatballs. Take 2/3 of two different slices of Tofutti mozzarella chesse http://www.tofutti.com/cheese.shtml and cover the top of the sandwich with them, end to end (the other 1/3 of the slices will extend too much over the sides). Put it back in the toaster oven until the cheese melts over the top (maybe another 30-60 seconds). Yank that sucker out, let it cool just a bit, and eat it. Soy cheeses and meats, by the way, are generally very high protein/low fat. For those who care about stuff like that.
