Anyone know about Joe Riding’s memorized deck effect? Thank you.

At the beginning of this thread, some people said that this is their favorite Memdeck routine. But follow ups by Turk and I have yielded nothing. Does anyone know what Joe Riding’s effect was? Cheers!

I know a lot about Joe Riding's mem deck (which he primarily used to raise money at charity events).
What exactly do you need to know fella?

I'm interested in the Riding routine as well. Maybe one of his friends can bury it print for us.

I'm not aware either of any published mem deck routine by Joe Riding (which of course doesn't mean anything). Merc Man, one thing many here would like to learn is where (if so?) his mem deck routines were published.
Otherwise, can you describe what made them special?

After seeing Pit Hartling perform I picked up his book "In Order". I have not yet memorized a deck but I thought his work and lecture were so good I bought the book anyways! Love his Sherlock effect.

Only just revisited this thread. I wish people would have PM'd me at the time - they may have then received a timely response, instead of 6 years later!
Anyway, to answer the question(s) above. Joe Riding outlined his Memorised Deck(s) Method (and routining) within Level 8 of his 'Close-up Magic Course' in 1996.

For me personally, I find Simon Aronson's Two Beginnings to be the absolute best. This is actually the first memorized deck routine I learned when I first began 13 years ago, and I never stopped. It's quick and effective, and don't need a table. You can keep the deck in your own hands, and the presentation is straight to the point. Never fails to impress people! Great for couples too!
Card Calling(mem deck not necessary) and Birthday Book have been very valuable to me too. |

I mess around with a lot of mem-deck tricks, but the ones I seem to keep coming back to are these:
- Barrie Richardson's ACAAN with stack - Simon Aronson - Invisible Card, Two Beginnings, Histed Heisted and Everybody's Lazy - Darwin Ortiz - Test Your Luck and Zen Master - Dani daOrtiz - Or Not! - Looch - Intuitive Aii - Bill Malone - Hands Off - Memory Test - Ben Earl - Ramjollock

I should have added Matt Baker to the list above - particularly Card College, Triple Fried and Casablanca. Some of the tricks outlined are similar to others on the list, so I like to switch between them to keep it interesting. For example Hands Off - Memory Test, Card College, Everybody's Lazy and Intuitive Aii have some similarities, but switching between them keeps them all fresh. Also comes in handy for a "show me again" or "show me another" occasion.

I can’t put the link here right now, but if you search “the trick that fooled shin lim” on Oscar Owen’s channel it should come right up

Wow! I just tried to perform ACAAN for the first time ever. I asked my friend, "Do you have a favourite card?". "Ace of spades", he replies. "How about a favourite number 1 to 52, maybe not too high?". He says "Six".
You can imagine how I felt. I remind him what has happened so far, just to hammer home that he has had two free choices. Then say, "Watch! I am going to count six cards off the top of that deck that is sitting in front of us. Now please turn over the next card." His mind is blown. I had previously shown him two killer tricks, but he says "That is best one of all. It's just impossible what you did. I didn't even know Ace of spades was my favourite card until you asked." If only it were always so easy. After he said Ace of spades, I had almost asked for a number 1-10, but thought I should challenge myself and try some serious mental gymnastics and sleights. I had been telling my friend that I am thinking about entering the Magic Circle apprentice scheme. He says "You should definitely go for it." It's been a magical moment for me that is fun to share. |

My top ones are:
-Pit Hartlings flick trick with a named card, impromptu rising card, any card to any name spelled and Asi’s take on card to box. -I’ll have 3 people pick a pack of cards, and peek the bottom cards while I’m looking away and then tell them their cards. I haven’t seen the peek published. -And then another trick I haven’t published where 4 playing cards are dealt on the table, a card is named and when the cards are show each of the 4 cards is shown to be their card, when turned over they’re shown to be jokers and can be examined. (Inspired by Paul Gordon’s Diminishing not likely) -I have a full Sympathetic deck handling for Mnemonica as well. One of the best built in effects! |

If I didn't already know a memdeck (Mnemonica), I would have learned one the second I read "Everybody's Lazy" by Simon Aronson. What a simply beautiful routine!

Mentioned above is "Histed Heisted", originally published in The Card Ideas of Simon Aronson (1978). It is such a great effect, and it can be performed for crowds both big and small. I memorized the Aronson stack in order to perform ;-) just this trick! It was a great first step, and with it the world of memorized deck magic and mentalism was thrown wide open for me.
