This happened yesterday...
I went to the supermarket to get some groceries, about 10 minutes before it closes. The parking lot was almost empty, so I parked in the family spot, which is closest to the door. Just as I am getting my basket from the trunk, I hear a very angry "Hey you!" from behind. A woman was absolutely furious, as I had parked in the family spot (which is closest to te door). I told her that 10 minutes before closing, I am willing to risk some poor family not getting any food because they have to park 30 feet further from the door. I was very verbal and I have the voice of a drill sargeant and at 6'4" I might be a bit intimidating, so she just quietly left. She walked straight to her Audi TT parked AT THE HANDICAPPED SPOT! I mean if I had had a golf club I could have gone Jack Nicholson on her car. Boy that made my blood boil. Done venting. Thanks.

Lol. That's funny. You never know, she could have had a permit.
I saw something quite funny once, a Hummer parked in a handicapped spot. They actually had a permit, but come on, if you can climb into a hummer, you don't need the special spot.

Yeah well, she could've had one, but it wasnt on the windshield where its supposed to be. She did have a child seat in the front (no child though), so I think that's what set her off-though there was like 40 family spots available-my car was the only car in that row!

The family spot? I've never seen one. What is the rationale behind that?

I'm with Marlin. Why should there be a family spot? There isn't any reason for one. Unless you have a medical condition it's not going to hurt any family to not park close to a store. God people are getting even more lazy with each passing day.

I am familiar with the expecting mothers spots. They may be a canadian thing though.
I call for sexual discrimination on those!

There's family spots in the parking structure at my local mall. Just two of them. The rationale is better understood when you actually read the signs- "Reserved for families with small children or mothers expecting one..." It's a nice option for pregnant women, who really don't want to have to walk so far. Plus, in inclement weather, it makes the trip into the building shorter for people with infants.
The Babies-R-Us near me has a whole row of these spots. It's just good policy. (And since it's their parking lot, they've got the right to do it.)

Here (Finland, that is) we have a lot of family spots at big supermarkets. They are meant for families with kids. The parking spaces per vehicle are considerably larger. Funny thing is, they are usually closer to the doors than handicapped parking (I kid you not!). that's the logic I have never understood. I mean you really don't have to take the whole family to the supermarket and need an extra large parking space for that, whereas a handicapped person doesn't have a choice. I never ever park in handicapped spot but I really couldn't care less about family parking. You cant even get a ticket for it.

In the bay area drizzle is a major storm.
I've seen the expectant mother spots at one drug store in San Jose. |

I'm amazed at how many people who work out at my gym park in the handicapped spaces.

I can understand closer parking spaces from the handicapped and even for pregnant women. But for entire families? That is going too far. I've known people that had a total of 12 children and they said made no difference to them how far or close they parked from a store. Yes that's one family but still come on this is going over board.

It makes sense in that little ones cannot easily be seen walking behind cars so the closer to the door the less walking and wider spots make it easier to get the little ones out.

I guess I have missed all the news stories of kids getting ran over in parking lots. Sounds stupid to me.

Believe me kids get hit and they get killed in parking lots.

Is it greater then in parking is it more less the same amount? Any is too many of course. But you also have to think about if the child was right near the parent or if the parent didn't make the child hold the parents hand while walking thru the parking lot etc.... |
