Hi and ho everyone
I'm looking for advice on illusions that can be done in a circus ring. I don't want to do the zig zag or thin model sawing in half. Any ideas? the circuses here only have one ring so the illusions don't need to be too large. Jonas Karlsson Vibono Magic Sweden

I used to perform a routine wherein I was dressed in a black trenchcoat along with my black derby hat....
I stood on top of a very thin platform in the centre ring....waved my hands in the air...and a cloud of smoke arose from beneath the platform....four L'Maitre Pyros were discharged..two on each side... When the smoke cleared a few seconds later a somewhat shorter lad still dressed in the same black gear but, with head bowed down.... He removed the trenchcoat and looked up...his face was painted white....a small 3 foot 2" or so assistant walked off the platform and the Illusion was done.... Many ways to go with this we did....but, this was the most fun for me...totally unexpected as the audience thinks something has gone wrong since you are presumedly still on top of the platform...~rr |

I like Rey Rey's idea. It is both clever and creative and gives the audience something more then the norm.
Well I would first like to take into consideration your working environment for the illusions. I guess we are safe to say that they will need to be done surrounded and be angle proof and not dependent on black art principles. With this in mind I would reccomend: - Sub trunk - Sword Basket - Chair Suspension - Broom suspension - Lester Lake Guillitine All of these are classics and can be performed in the road. They play big and pack fairly small and should be quite easy to move into and out of the ring.

There is a book, which I believe is out of print, titled "Illusions in the Round". This is an illusion book with the circus performer in mind. The illusions do not seem to difficult to build, however, I cannot speak to their effectiveness.

Thanbks for the great reference. I would love to take a look at that myself as I often do a lot of fair shows. I am not always in the round, but I try to keep my illusions so that I can perform them under most any condition.

Here are some more I do in the round. Mis-Made, Stack Of Boxes, Twister, Modern Art. Of course you have to do some extra turn arounds so everone can see the effect.

Sword Basket is terrific - can be done just about anywhere. Also, I like Geometrix which is sortof like Cube-zag. Will probably cost much more than a sword basket, though. Ron Reid |

The Flotaing Table. Using Dirk Losander's floating table, you can go out into the audience with it and get an audience meber to help you float it. In either case, they will never guess the secret. It is awesome.

The illusions in Steinmeyer's book, "Device and Illusion" contains at least three.
passing a lady thru the neon tubes, the moving knot, the illusion with all the knifes (not the actual names of the illusions of course). s |

Idea: I have seen squared circles that look like circus wagons... I not sure what you would do with it, but it's an idea.

Nice ideas. However, I would start getting illusions by sticking with the ones that are considered classics and also one that will not cost you an arm and a leg to get. This way you know your getting a great illusion you can use and can immediataly build back on your investment.

First let me get a bit of background from you before i suggest a good colsing illusion for your show. What is your intended market and client base? What types of places are you hoping to be performing this illusion show for? What type of character and stage style do you have? This background info. will help to better get an idea what might be best for you.

Here I go again, but... Think Outside the Box. Your killer closing effect will be performed on top of an elephant (assuming your circus has elephants and the trainer will cooperate with you) I'd suggest a levitation followed by vanishing the elephant.
No elephants? How about big cats? Time for a trip to see Seigfried and Roy. Think outside the box! Professor Spellbinder

Ok I will work the act in a smal/medium one ring circus seats about 350 poeple. I want to do it in a clasic manner dresed in white tei and tails.
As this is in Sweden we aren't allowed to have big cats and the circus don't have any elephants. It does however have 12 cammels (they only have six camels on the road with them the rest are in an other circus ), some dogs, goats and horses. As it will be in a circus the act can only be 8 - 10 minuts long and the props must be able to pack smal.

I suggest then you go with some of my earlier suggestions for illusions. These all pack down flat and set up easily and are all anmgle proof and can be done surrounded. A great ending effect would be a blamo box. Very easy to load uyp, can be performed surrounded and packs flat. You could produce a dogs collar or a BIG fancy oversized bone. You place this into the cabinet and at the end, pull off the lid to find 2 of the circus dogs now inside. That coul be a great ending and would not be too difficult to do.

Try the Fire cage. The appearance of a large cat would be interesting. Try the one where a lady turns into a gorilla, and the gorilla gets loose.

A fire cage is similar to a Blamo production, but is much safer to use. Chances are that in most circuses, they try to stay away from fire too much as it is not such a safe thing. A Blamo box will give you the same results and impact but easier to manage.
