I finally got a chance to put this to use last night.
I was out on the third street Promenade in Santa Monica, CA doing some magic for folks there, and decided to finally do Pyro. I have to tell you, I had doubts as to people buying into the whole "Blister" thing, but they took it hook, line and sinker. They literally looked just like this . This is STRONG magic. I did it to three different groups of people (and by groups I mean BIG groups at least 40) and EVERY time their jaws hit the floor. I got a lot of,"Your WAY better than David Blaine" type of comments. LOL Anyway, just wanted to say that this gets HUGE reactions for sure. Peace

Right on! Pyro perception is a HEAVY hitter. As long as you have the right presentation, you're set. I can't believe it sells for only $20!

Here is mine...
Pick a card any card from the top bottom middle, or would you like me to shuffle and you say stop on any card? Got one, Great. Now I want you to hold that card with you thumb and index finger. If you don't know what they are they are these two fingers here. Ok, now I want you to concentrate on your card extremely hard...........I don't see smoke coming out of your head, think harder. Ok I see a little is this it? (I say the card out loud) No?! Are you sure? Ok, well I guess I have to do something I was dared to do earlier. The dare was if I didn't get a card right from a spectator I would have to go through pain by burning the same fingers that the spectator is holding their card by. Does anyone have a lighter? (If not I'll bring out my own with some patter why I asked for one) Ok, may I see it please? Now watch, I'm going to burn my fingers untill I get a blister.....and sometimes they look odd. Come here, look look, Is that your card? The spectator flips!!!!

I've decided that Pyro isn't so hot after all, and I would greatly encourage all of you to hide those gimmicks (ugghhh, even the word makes me cringe!) in the drawer. Never use them again!
Of course, I'll keep using mine, but I entreat all of you to please get rid of yours immediately. Find some real magic to do, not this amateur kid stuff. Brian Pyro Freak |

I bought Pyro Perception with a cousin of mine and he insisted that it wouldn't get a good reaction. I disagreed.
The first time I tried it was to another magi - which was a bad idea, more so because he was a magic dealer and he told me he liked it but it didn't exhibit a good reaction. My cousin smiled at me with a 'I told you so' type look. I was intent on getting a good reaction. One night I was seated among friends and did it and their jaws hit the floor and I gotta say - this thing ROCKS! My only complaint would be that sometimes I can't get a good blister and it almost looks indecipherable. That's only sometimes, I guess practice makes perfect. Take care all! Logan

I don't have this, but I was discussing it with my local magic shop guy, and he suggested the following routine for using Pyro Perception when use of fire is not advisable (or practical) -
Make a 'normal' shaped blister using a key (a la Penn and Teller), and show the spectator, explaining that it's an occupational hazard - card burns - it's what you get from too much card handling. The presentation can then continue without the fire aspect, as I'm sure you can work out. It seems a nice alternative to me. Sometimes fire just isn't 'do-able' (and I like the key idea) What do you think? |

And here's why: In the original presentation, when the performer plunges his hand into the flame, burns himself, and shows the blister in the shape of the card index, it's a shocking revelation partly because absolutely nothing has prepared the audience for it. If, as your magic advisor recommends, you show a blister first, and then have it transform into the index of the chosen card, it's just not as unexpected. Additionally, there's the fact that audiences love fire. It plays big, people know its properties (it's hot, it burns people, it leaves blisters), and when you show the blister, audiences wince because they know what it feels like to get a burn blister. Take away that empathy, and you deflate the effect. For every effect there is a proper time and place. If fire cannot be used, I suggest finding the effect whose time it is, rather than trying to cram this effect into the slot.

Speaking of performance, here's my story of the best performance I've done with PP. I was at a neighbor's get-together and they had a bon fire. I used a stick to scrape a small piece of wood (pretty much charcoal at this point) to the side and let it cool. I did the routine as usual, but instead of the lighter, I used the coal. I just picked it up as I moved my hand into the edge of the fire and apparently plucked the coal out of the flames with my thumb and index finger. Of course I played it up. I let one of the people watching rub away the soot and the guy freaked out. Everyone was amazed and the reaction was ten times better than without the lighter. It looked more convincing because the ash gave it a more "real" feeling to it, not to mention the ambience and mood that the fire in the darkness set. Try it out if the opportunity presents itself.

From those of you who have performed PP, which do you find stronger? Showing the blisters, then the card or showing the card, then the blisters?

I find that showing the blisters first make it more astonishing as they would be exclaiming "He doesn't know my card!"
Just my personal preference Take care, Logan

Where is the shock when you show blisters first?! I think picking a card then reveal the blisters hits HARD as it is.

I don't think they mean to show the blisters before have the card selected, they mean that they have a card selected without the spec looking at it, show the blisters, then have them turn over the card. I agree that this is the strongest way to do it.

I love this too! Imagine asking them to fan your finger with the face down card to cool it down. "too late... already got a blister... but wait'

Okay, so it sounds like blister first. But should the spectator have looked at her card first, or is it more magical if you both look at it after the revelation of the blister?

Personally, I prefer to get the card out of the way as soon as possible -- she looks at a card and "burns it into [her] mind," puts the card back in the deck, and I pocket the deck.
Next, I say that I will attempt to read her thoughts; to do this, I use a lighter's flame as a point of focus for us both. She stares into the flame to send her thoughts, I stare into the flame to receive them. But instead of receiving the image of the card, I sense something inexplicable pulling my hand toward the flame. It burns me, and a clap the lighter shut with my other hand. Then, I look at my hand to assess the damage. That's when I notice the number and suit, in blisters on my fingers. I read them to the participant and show them to her. After it's sunk in, I get an iced beverage to hold onto and soothe my burnt fingers, which provides the pause needed for the audience to feel the shock.
