There are numerous books on the subject but it is really best learned from a teacher.

It is, as Fredrick said, best learned from a teacher. My teacher died in 2007 and was one of the best mimes and teachers the art ever saw. Tony Montanaro was an excellent teacher in the art of mime as well, and he has books and DVDs out that are a great start, but sadly Mr. Montanaro is no longer with us. His wife, Karen, still teaches today and is based in Maine. Her website can be seen here: http://www.mimetheatre.com/
I have also heard some great things about Samuel Avital as mentioned by Zoobini. |

If you live in the LA area Cary Trivanovich is terrific. Everything I know about mime I learned from him. I even applied what I learned to help improve my sleight of hand.

Thanks for the info, everyone. I've always been interested in it but never knew where to start. It looks like the New York ones on Fredrick's link is closest to me...Does anyone have recommendations on which ones are better or more affordable?

Here's a random tip for you.....I was once told when learning mime that if after five minutes of practise your body doesn't hurt all over then you are doing it wrong!

I agree...find a teacher with whom you are comfortable...Consider along with the Americas, studying in Europe (Paris, especially) also and/or China.
Also, think about learning yoga as an on-going practice alongside the mime... I do... All the best |
