I guess it depends on how you do them.
Except for cards from the mouth I don't do card tricks in my kids shows; but, I've done a lit of card tricks for kids successfully, so I don't see why it couldn't work. Also, of course, "kids" can meant so many things. 8 or 9 yr. olds+ like good card tricks by themselves, much younger than that and I make them silly.

How old the kids? Table Hopping or 20/30 kids sat on the floor watching you?
Oh, my God, winter is here again and I'm actually talking about card tricks on a forum. I hate the bl***y things! T. What's on Channel 4 tonight? Shall I watch French Connection II. Been meaning to for days. Love the car chase. Card tricks . . . . no, no, please no. |

IMO it depends...
-- on the age of the kids -- the quality of the routines I do my invisible deck/skunk routine at EVERY family event I do... and it always kills, regardless of the age. The trick is good (invisible deck is great) but the real fun for the kids isn't the "trick," it's the interplay with the adult volunteer, the fun bits with the skunk, and everything else I do. The final reveal at the end amounts to about 1% of the entire routine - of which 99% is fun for everyone else there. For older kids, I do Dan Harlan's "Hold it Buster" routine, which goes over great as well... but it's more of a real card "trick" where the card placed on a table switches places with cards held in my hand over and over again. Even though I have done this for younger crowds, I tend to only do this routine for 8 year olds and up. I don't do any "pick-a-card-any-card" tricks with just a deck and my nimble fingers... I don't find them all that interesting personally. --J

I have great response from a Diminishing Cards routine I do, but other then that I avoid doing card tricks for children age 7 and under. If I'm doing a show with children age 8 and above I might do a few simple card tricks.

Yes, as long as they are 7 or so. (or older). Some card tricks are simple enough for a child to follow that is younger than 7. For example, the ambitious card, triumph, a good color change.

Card manipulation is fun for any age. Not really a card trick, though.

Best card trick for kids, accidently spray them into your face and if you can get one stuck in your glasses it is a bonus. Second best, drop them and then try to act as if you didn't.

If kids are too young they haven't started to play Go Fish or War or other games, so they aren't familiar with what a deck of cards is and why shuffling them is important. So a standard "pick a card" trick doesn't have any meaning for them.
However, anything that treats the cards as objects, like color changes, manipulation, diminishing cards, a puppet finding the card after causing mayhem (Charles Out Of My Hat, etc.), will work. Also acting like a klutz, but then you can do that with anything. |

I sometimes do the McCombical deck for older kids. You can do Hold It Buster for kids from age 5 or 6 - when they're in kindergarten. Don't use Harlan's routine when you do it for kids, though. You need your own patter.
The common thread with these two trick is, the kids don't have to be able to identify the cards. The magic isn't in identifying a selected card. It's a transposition or a switch. |

Magicbob has designed some card tricks especially for kids in his e-Book "Kards 4 Kids" on my site.
Also, Wiz Kid Qua-Fiki's e-Book "Go Fish Card Tricks" (also on my site) has effects that are visually designed for kids, who may not recognize a three of puppy dog paws (clubs) but can tell a red fish from a blue fish, and one fish from two fish.

I often do Invisible deck with "Dad". It's an imaginary deck first and after I do a few Card Flourishes with the Invisible Deck as a gag I toss it to Dad and have him turn one card over (byplay not included). I have him toss it back to a Net Bag so it becomes visible, which every body "gets". Then I ask the kids if adults ever ask them to follow directions and if they want to see if an adult can follow directions. Then it's proved that not only does Dad have a strong imagination, he can also follow directions.
Later I do some Card Flourishes in a call back to the Invisible Deck gag Card Flourishes I.E. One Handed Shuffle, Waterfall, Split one fan into two and throw the Deck over the shoulder and catch it in two fans. While there is a card chosen and found it is mostly about the Card Jugglery. If the kids are 4 or 5 I don't do any Card Magic. Sometimes if the adults are talking in the back I'll ask the kids if they ever play cards, then, no matter what the answer, I say "OK, lets try it, everyone get a dollar out of your pocket and wave it in the air. This will really quiet loud adults quickly. Then I say "Well, maybe another time, when the adults aren't paying such close attention." It gets a laugh and makes a point. I don't do this often as mostly the adults are paying attention. I also like McCombical for older kids and mixed family groups. - Mary Mowder |

I do one card trick at kids shows but it is for the adults, it is the Oscar or Max or whatever card trick you call it now. The one where you ask them to think if the name of one card and you say it is "Phil" and show that their card has Phil on the back.

I do two card tricks, one is Ken Scott's Library Card and the other is the Pro Viper.
In Both, the card trick is meaningless, it is the results of the routine are the value of to the Card trick. There are other routines but I don't do them as much. (Close-up stuff)

When the world is awash with so much wonderful material which engages and captivates and delights children, why bother?
Because you can? Because you haven't the imagination or can't shift yourself to learn to do anything better? I have seen the 'best' of cardworkers, avoided them and even hidden from them at conventions as they advance upon us, a maniacal glint in their eye, arms outstretched running a pack from hand to hand. There is only one card trick. Choose, in any of a million ways, a card. And the magician will reveal it, in any of a million ways. Boring, boring, boring. And I don't give a fig who the magician is.

There are loads that work, the best are the comedy versions: my Wacky Weasel (pre-cursor of the Wacky Wackoon) will do a "card trick" in his Christmas piece this year. But, it won't look like a card trick, he will choose a present from a selection of pictures.
I also really like Wolf's Chicken Bucket, the Outhouse (though this is better for a family audience), and Barry Mitchell's "Super Sleuth" is great for older kids. For walkabout, you can't beat Ambitious Card - for younger kids I use a Pirate Happy Families deck, with all different pictures of pirates. The kid chooses one pirate, who turns out to be a great escape artist, etc. This works for kids as young as 3, no problem. Then, for older kids you can get them to sign a card (use a blank one if you prefer). Masuda's WOW! Is excellent for kids, as is card to wallet/pocket/other impossible place. And Torn and Restored card is good - the "other" card trick plot? I would say, if you choose to include a card trick in your show, make sure it's only one. And, if you already have a trick with pictures printed on cards, you should consider that a "card trick", too. The magician who just picks up one set of pictures/cards/flat cut-outs after another will quickly bore the kids. :) |

Tony,
I have plenty of imagination and I'm constantly learning new Magic. The kids aren't bored watching my show. I like having the variety. Kids over 7 are curious about cards and really enjoy Card Jugglery. I can't make you like Card Effects but many people do like them if they are done in an entertaining way. I don't like too many at once or boring Card Effects either. - Mary Mowder |
