Whose talking about personal details? I'm simply talking about using your name. And, Chris, if you did purchase something from me online you certainly did have to at least supply your email address and name.

When you're engaged in a debate around here and your adversary has to resort to, "Oh yeah, well, we don't even know your real name!", it's how you know you've won the argument.

I use my real first name, and the initial of my surname as my username here. My profile also lists my (approximate) location. My profile picture is of me (and presently, my rather handsome Border Collie, Henry). I've often thought of reducing the amount of detail in said profile, for reasons I shall explain. Clearly others here have learned from my mistake and decided to keep their identity private. About 18 months ago, my identity and occupation was researched by another (now permanently banned) Café member. We had opposing views on a number of issues, and I think it's fair to say had several heated discussions. For reasons known only to himself, he chose to (presumably) Google me and the seemingly insignificant details I had posted about my life here previously. I was then informed that he'd sent his friends to my workplace whilst he was in town, and instructed them to ask questions about me. Fortunately, it was my night off. I have no idea whether this event actually happened or not. I asked a few of my co-workers, and nobody seemed to know anything about it. Regardless, I was then publicly accused of having lied about my occupation, and accused of being fired by my employer. Ironically, I was also accused of inappropriate behaviour with children (part of my job includes operating a "ghost train"), despite the fact that the venue I work in is a cabaret theatre, and is intended for adult audiences. I'm sure you'll agree that not only are these accusations insulting, they're potentially damaging to my reputation. The Café has more than 45,000 members. With all due respect to the overwhelming majority, some of the clientele here are first class nutters. I completely understand, and agree with the decision by many of the members here to keep their identities private. All the best, Chris |

I understand your position, Chris, and agree with you. I just have a problem with guys who come on here with screen names like magicwazzoo23 who, generally in their first posts, ask things like, "What's the best ___________?" etc.
Like I said, I prefer not to share secrets with those who won't share at least something about themselves. Many of those members who use pseudonyms at least PM me with their real names, and I have no problem sharing with them. But there are those who will send me anonymous PMs asking for information regarding certain effects or techniques that I'd no more share with them than I would with someone who came up to me after a show and asked how I did something. I generally ignore them. Good thoughts, Bob PS - That's why I disabled PMs on my account. |

My apologies. I took your message TOTALLY wrong. Names I totally agree with. Other details, not so much. Brody (reasonable and chagrined) |
