I'm new to the idea of magic, I'm a spiritual seeker so now I see, at some point, I was destined to cross the path of the subject.
I'm curious however on how the results differ from ceremonial magic, and it's meditative counterpart. Also, if the difference is vast; I'm forced to ask, how practical is ceremonial magic in the 21st century, and what should be my starting point? I apologize if my post is miscategorized , I'm just searching for answers. Thanks. |

Where did you here about the magic Café? It's true that in this particular section there are several of us who practice ceremonial magick and other forms of "real" magick ( actions meant to have actual effects on the objective and/or subjective universe in ways through non physical means); but the Café is for performing magicians. Card tricks, kids birthday parties and (for example in the bizarre section) occult and spooky themed magic tricks, routines and performances. All that being said; if you want to learn about ceremonial magick I HIGHLY recommend any of John Michael Greer's books on the subject. There is also a very popular book called "Modern Magick" by Donald Michael Kraig, who is actually a member of the Café and posts in the hypnosis section.

Since I already recommended something, I'll say one more thing. If you get Donald Michael Kraig's book (which is good), you will get to a ritual called the I.O.B. ritual. Personally (and it's just my opinion) I don't like the idea and instead I recommend getting a book called the Core Transformation process by Connirae Adreas.

Since you mentioned it though ...there is a wonderful book titled "Hermetic Magic" by Stephen Flowers. It's a very different type of ceremonial magick that I mentioned above (ultimately it's the root of these other styles), but very very good. As well as Courtney's recommendations, Purp, you might want to read an overview of Western esotericism such as Richard Smoley and Jay Kinney's Hidden Wisdom or Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke's The Western Esoteric Traditions. (You'll then have a better understanding of magic than most of the conjurers on this site who ostensibly simulate it.)
Meditation and magical ritual are two different sets of techniques, with largely different purposes, and many magical traditions (including Golden Dawn-style Hermetic magic) include both. |

I would also recommend Eugene and Robert Neale's book "Magic and Meaning" to show the similarities between the two 'magics".

If you are still following this thread Purp, here are my two centavos worth.
As pointed out above, this forum is for folks who practice the various forms of "magic" generally discussed in this Wikipedia article, whether as professional performers, or as amateurs for their own enjoyment. I fall into the latter group. Therefore, relative to your first question "I'm curious however on how the results differ from ceremonial magic, and it's meditative counterpart." I think that you can see that our "magic" is unrelated to the "magic" you are interested in. I am also a practitioner of the Soto Zen school of Mahayana Buddhism, but these two interests are completely unrelated. One does not follow from the other, and vice versa. The Soto Zen practice includes, among other things, ceremony, the recitation of vows, and chanting, as well as Zazen (seated meditation). Relative to your question "I'm forced to ask, how practical is ceremonial magic in the 21st century, and what should be my starting point?" I can offer this from my own experience. The direction of our Zen practice, including rituals and ceremonies, is inward, not outward. We are not concerned with trying to influence "things". Rather we examine our own minds and, with time, begin to see for ourselves the extent to which we create our own world, moment by moment. That "world" includes our notions of "time", "self", "spritual", "seeker", "destiny", "21st century", and of course "things". From this place, Purp, to what extent are your questions meaningless? As to your "starting point", right where you are now will do just fine. Where else is there? You're "just searching for answers"? Does your lawn need mowing? May your life go well.
