Sleightly,
This has been a MAJOR problem for me regarding design. I have NOT decided the final shape. Actually, now is a good time for everybody to chime in with their opinion. For the record. When you KNOW the "PM"...it is obvious to some degree. However, I added an immediate twisting/rotation of the mirror after the PM. I felt this adds a bit of confusion to which side was which etc. My dilemma is that if it is symmetrical..it is BORING. It looses the random broken shard look. So, everyone watch the video again, take into account that, as a collective, we may discover even more ways of handling the prop, and then, if all fails...I make it the way I want! Everyone that has pre-ordered are a pretty vocal bunch and none seemed to have minded the discrepancy...except you Just kidding. But IF you place a pre-order I will be glad to shape it symmetrical for you. How's that for service Sleightly? Take care and NEVER be afraid to criticize me...I worked as an Commercial Artist for over 2 Decades. I got THICK SKIN Once again, everyone of interest, please post your opinion regarding the Upper Wedge Angle at the top of the shard. Take care, Chance

I love the shape of the jumbo Shattered as is. I love the way that it looks like just a random piece of a broken mirror. I don't see the discrepency as a huge problem, because with the angles I think it's enough to make people second guess as to which side they were really looking at.
If anything, can you make mine like this, Chance? LOL Just kidding - I'm sure whatever you decide upon will be great.

Do you remember I asked about the extra shards...I was going to use them as a cover for the right angle after I siliconed the edges....that was the purpose for them...Please do include them..I'll pay extra...
You can use one to overlap the edge and display a few broken pieces..I still haven't found a clean way to introduce them but, I will magnets perhaps...~rr Thick skin eh? Wait till you read my email! j/k ~rr |

Glass shatters in all kinds of sizes and shapes. Often Glass shatters in abolutely symetrical forms. I don't think people have a set definition of a shard or glass fagment. They have a general idea; broken glass has edges, and sharp corners....
The current shape visually presents, along with a word of description by the performer calling it a "shard", a legitimacy for itself. I don't think any spectator would say; "Glass Shards don't look like that." Don't run, if you aren't being chased. It looks great to me as shown. BroDavid

With all due respect Brother David? I don't think you understand the point "Sleightly" is making....
If you do the "PM" the right side is the right side always....get it...and then "PM" again and the left side remains the left side once again... Now are you clear? Didn't think so... Can someone help me to be a little more lucid?~rr |

Chance, I like the shard shape you show in the video. I think it looks fine.

BroDavid,
ReyRey is basically trying to say that you may have missed the point regarding the actual discrepency. There would be no discrepency if the shard were cut in a perfect isosceles triangle. Horizontal at the top, 2' wide, tapering 9" down to a meeting point. If you did the PM using this shape. It would be IDENTICAL in appearance. Using my existing design, with a SLIGHT taper at the top...maybe 4 degrees, the PM would expose the discrepency as the angle switches sides. I added the angle at the top for LOOKS and a more random shape. So, again, by adding a twist/spin immediatley after the PM, I feel it adds enough confusion so as to make backtracking far more difficult. Just my opinion as I have tested this over and over and NOBODY spotted it. Fellow magician,Brian Cooke, just wrote me an email: "Hey man ,I just watched the vid and it looks sweet. I even played it for the guys in the office and they thought there was some sand in it moving aroound or magnet pieces on it or some crazy idea like that. Rock on man!! Brian" So I am not sure if this is really a problem. PLEASE remember, the AVI demo was after only 3 to 5 MINUTES of practice. Probably BAD on my part as I was in a big rush to show the new effect. But I think with everyones input and personal choice of handling, we can easily solve the slight discrepency without changing the shape. I hope this helps. On another note. I BROKE the RULES and posted this topic in the wrong area. I apologized to Steve as this category is for reviewing EXISTING EFFECTS IN HAND by the magicians. I will try to find a Category which is more applicable to what I need which is: Product Development Help Does this exist? I think it would be a great thread for ideas in the making and getting input from magicians so we can avoid the "NEW & IMPROVED" syndrome 2 weeks after you have purchased the effect. I do NOT have all the answers and always appreciate everybody's input, used or not, as I learn from all viewpoints which can only make my creative process that much better. Thanks again, Chance

Thanks to ReyRey, and Chance for clarifying things to me. My apology to anyone I may have offended.
I admittedly missed part of the point, (I have been a bit "out of sorts" over the past couple of weeks as I am rcovering from a bout with pneumonia...So my mind hasn't been as sharp as I would would like.) but I agree with Chance's experience in his testing, and I don't think a lot of people are going to be too aware of the "flip" of the PM. So the bottom line hasnt changed for me. I don't care what shape the the Shard is. (as long as it can easliy be seen) I guide my spectators with my presentation. So, since I control the presentation, I take the spectator where I want them them to go. And I have no problem with doing the PM with an odd share, a symetrical shape, or whatever. As I can turn it afterwards (as Chance mentioned) etc. And I can cover it any one of a number of ways. So, I will take it, as is, or however Chance decides to make it. In any shape, I think Jumbo Shattered will be real winner. BroDavid

Chance,
If Regal can get away with selling a card box that has more sides on the inside than it does on the outside I think you can get away with selling a shard with a minor logical discrepancy. The very first paddle tricks all suffered from this topographical problem as they were usually performed with table knives and the edge always ended up on the wrong side when executing the PM. Most people aren't going to notice anyway. Few noticed Regal's deck problem, fewer Kennedy's Card through window discrepancy and even fewer still are going to point out Jumbo's miniscule flaw. Keep up the good work. Are you coming over for Lynnwoods Day of Magic? We'd love to see you over here.

Exactly! It is the HIGHEST Quality Velvet available. It is a Deep Wine Red with a richer Gold Embroidery. At this price...it's a STEAL! I will be selling the effect on my website for $39.95 (not sure if I mentioned this before) so get it cheap while you can folks. We have been taking more personal time off, weekends mostly, and have slowed the schedule a bit to avoid exhaustion. I must admit, it was getting pretty intense. We just got our Jacuzzi up and running and it sure makes the nights more relaxing. Thanks again, Chance

I just recieved a message from Brother Wolf..
He is only waiting for the arrival of the handy dandy carrying custom embroidered pouches. He might be ready to ship these by Monday? I can't wait for mine to arrive. I'll post an honest non-biased review once I play around with it! I better not slice my hand Chance? Hmm? I wonder if that is why all of the carrying pouches are Blood Deep Red Wine colored? Looking forward to recieving mine.~r2 |

ClodAppleleft,
ReyRey has given a current update ( thankee RR ) Shipping will begin Tuesday, given we get back the embroidered pieces today. I have decided to make the JUMBO Shattered the same shape as seen in the demo video UNLESS you have specified a symmetrical shape in your Pre-Order request. The overwhelming majority of people asked said that the minor discrepancy was not worth worrying about. Hope this helps I have to get my buns back to work! Take care, Chance

I don't think it matters that it is not symetrical. I have never had people notice which side the blade is on, on the Colour Changing Knives routine! Think about it guys, when do lay people notice things like that?
Keep up the good work and amazing Quality Chance! All the best Steve Dela |

Well, I'm late to this party (been away on vacation) but I must say that I WANT ONE ! Jumbo Shattered video demo looks great, Chance. I'm glad you're keeping the "shard" shape the same as in the video. I don't think most (if any) specators will notice the discrepancy on the PM . I showed the video 5 or 6 times to my wife and kids . They were amazed and didn't pick up that it was a PM . (and they've seen me do paddle stuff before and one of the kids knows the PM , but Jumbo Shattered blew him away)
I would pay extra for the broken pieces unless you advise that I can make my own from a piece of plexi-mirror . I want to keep the climax that mirrors ( ) the original climax of the regular size Shattered . My first thought is to put the mirror shard into a paper lunch bag , pound it with a mallet , then dump out the pieces onto a tray or table. Sweep the pieces back into the paper bag , shake 'em up, a magical gesture.......... and voila ! mirror is restored . The paper bag "change bag" is shown in the Mark Wilson Course and other places. I'm sure there are other (better) ideas for switching the mirror and the broken pieces. Any thoughts on switching ? I'm going to do the Jumbo Shattered with gloves on to sell the idea that the shard is really sharp and dangerous ("Don't try this at home, kids" ) . |
