I was talking to my brother-in-law yesterday and he mentioned an article that he read about a clown in New York who does something similar to a two-hour party. At first I thought it was Silly Billy, but he said this clown was supposed to make about $150,000 a year (I have no idea how much Silly Billy makes, but for some reason I think it's more) and he got the impression that this clown doesn't particularly like kids (which I'm sure isn't Silly Billy).
Does anyone know 1)who the clown is and 2) what article this is? Thanks everyone Courtney

Crusty the clown is famous east of the Mississippi.
Actually I know several bad clowns that don't really like kids, but none of them are making 6 figures.

It probably is Silly Billy the self proclaimed best children's entertainer in NYC.Why did I not think of saying that?

A NY clown named here had a Google Adword appearing around MANCHESTER UK !! some time ago. I e-mailed him to advise him of this and check his Adword settings. I did not have the courtesy of a reply. Obviously not all that clever.

No offense, Bernie, but I would think that any clown who has appeared three times on Letterman segments, has performed for personalities like Julia Roberts, Madonna and Bruce Springsteen, has an acclaimed top-selling book and video, was featured on a nationally televised reality series, has performed repeatedly on stage at The Magic Castle, lectures around the world and earns a six-figure income doing what he loves is very justified in proclaiming himself an area's best children's entertainer until someone with a better verifiable record comes along. Respectfully, let's give David Kaye his due.

To say you're "the best" entertainer is bad marketing. Everyone knows that "best" is subjective, so some folks will always find fault with any given act.
Far more subtle to say: "One of the leading entertainers", which doesn't sound so arrogant. If you want to put subjective opinions on your site, make them those of your clients. I have so many glowing testimonials from happy folk, some of them SO over the top, I can't put the whole message on my website, as it STILL seems rather arrogant to do so. A good tactic is to spread testimonials about your website, using just short phrases. You can also devote a page to testimonials, where fuller quotations can be read. Most folks don't bother to visit this page. Check out my website to see what I mean: http://www.pottythepirate.com Silly Billy has been very clever with his marketing. Admittedly, his book "Seriously Silly" is excellent, almost the modern bible of kidshow entertainers. This very well observed publication, with it's insights into modern kids' thought processes, and superbly structured routines, is the cornerstone of his success. Sure, he's an entertaining guy, but I think David's real contribution to magic has been his book, his lectures, and thinking. Ironically, what I've seen of his performances isn't so impressive. But that is purely subjective, and I only mean that I, personally, am not much taken with his overall style. Yes, I LOVE his bits of business, his comedic approach, etc. He still has a huge market of folks who DO enjoy his style, though, and he well deserves it. All performers are different, and it's much better to get to know the "enemy" than to be competitive and aggressive. Get together with the local competition, and talk things over. It's a great way to network, and to develop your understanding of the business. Potty |

I think saying your the best is good marketing, as long as you could be conceivably viewed that way.
I don't say this as a good marketer, because I'm not, but as a consumer. It's totally possible to be voted the best or judged the best by all sorts of various groups, or to be generally considered the best (I consider Silly Billy and Terry Herbert to be the best). If a client doesn't believe it that's okay, in that case it's just normal marketing ("best movie of the year" "greatest show on earth"); but if they read that your the best, and you are widely regarded as amazing and you have testimonials from Madonna and Bruce Springsteen then I could totally accept a client saying "oh, well he's the best." Positioning. I am something of an expert on the subject, having been suckered into believing someone's hype countless times!

It seems some of you miss read my statement. What I said is true not a bash I do not remember any NYC competition that he won to be the best. I know how he got his reputation it is clever how it was done. That is why I said I wish I thought of that. Also Skip he is not a clown. Clown like maybe but not a clown. Almost every top magician/clown entertainer in NYC has done a job for a famous person it is hard to avoid. Some use it in marketing and some do not.I have yet to do a show for a celebrity their kids yea. They do not call you to book the show some assistant does and then you get screened and searched before the show and they almost never say much to you.It is not that glorious but it is pretty cool. I do think his book is good I got it a while back. So I am not bashing just stating a fact .I would say he is one of the top in NYC not the best

Does anybody have an answer to either of the original questions:

I haven't double checked with my brother-in-law, but I'm pretty sure that he was talking about the Great Zuchini. Here's the article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/con......434.html It's a very good article, and if it was the person my brother-in-law was thinking of he obviously misremembered a few things, or misinterpreted them at least. There was also a brief discussion of the article (with mixed reviews) here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=17 Interesting eh? Personally I like him after reading the article. He seems to be a wonderful entertainer with some oh-so-human foibles.

When I sent the PM, I mentioned that one of the details that was possibly incorrect, was the location of the performer.

I don't see my brother-in-law very often, but I will ask; keep in mind though that this was something that he (as a "lay person") read with no particular knowledge of magic or need to remember it and then tried to call it up when something I said reminded him of it. Most of what he says matches up with the story though.

The Great Zuchini! I remember that guy. Not to be confused with The Great Zuchini in Central California

Except the parts about him being a clown and not liking children. I guess his performance is clowning, so by that definition he is, but he clearly loves kids. I read this article when it came out a couple of years back and I was fascinated by the guy, I have to admit. I wonder how he's doing now. |

I believe Mr, Zuchini is from the Washington DC area, he's not from New York at all, and I have also heard that he is a very successful childrens entertainer. The part about hating children I have never heard.
