I'm a big fan of the "Best Book" thread that always shows up here around this time. I thought that since there doesn't seem to be a regular person doing a similar one for "Best DVD" that I'd throw my hat in the ring and start this thread. (Apologies if I am indeed stepping on someone else's turf, in which case they can take it over.) The object is to poll the readership of the Café and come up with a "Best DVD/Download of 2010" and assorted runners-up. I've made this award for DVDs as well as downloads because, these days, a good percentage of products are sold in both formats. And, going forward, I wouldn't be surprised to see downloads eclipse DVDS in the marketplace.
Like the best book competition, this thread will collect nominations until the end of the year. I'll update the nominations list periodically and post a final list of eligible nominated titles at the end of the year. Beginning 12:01AM January 1, 2011 until 11:59 on January 31 each Café member can vote once for their top choice and on February 1 the title with the most votes wins. Nominations should be posted in this thread and are restricted to DVDs or downloads commercially released for the first time in 2010. (So, reissues of earlier released DVDS are not eligible unless they have been modified or significantly altered in some way.) Also, DVDs that are simply instructions for packaged gimmicks aren't eligible either (those should fall in the "Trick" category). Otherwise, all is fair game, ranging from commercially released DVDs based on live performances to the standard sets of instructional DVDs. Last year a similar thread named "True Astonishments" as the Best of 2009. There doesn't seem to be a similar 800-lb gorilla in the marketplace this year, so it will be interesting to see what people coalesce around. |

Bugjack,
Great initiative ! Hope we'll get lot of ideas from the Café Community. You just forgot to vote... This year I particularly liked Michael Close Devious and Malone meets Marlo set with perhaps a slight preference for the latter one. Let's see what happen... |

I would split the two, personally. What does the "winner" win?
So that said I would say... Download nomination: CAANDY (Vanishing, Inc.) DVD nomination: The Life and Times of Albert Goshman by Magic by Gosh - DVD (OLDER STUFF, but I think that is the point.) Looking at the DVD's this year, kinda lack-luster. For me the Close DVD's where a great disappointment.

Thanks, everyone. Mago, I will definitely nominate a title or two before the nominating deadline. There are a couple of things I'm waiting to see. Dinger, as for what the "winner" wins, well, simply the adulation of this community and props that come from Google searches far into the future. (And I agree, CAANDY is very clever.)

Aldo Columbini's new 3 DVD set on Nick Trost is pretty sweet.
Seeing the Trost effects performed -- and seeing how powerful they really are (sometimes hard to tell from the descriptions) -- is very cool. |

Since "Extension of Me" is already on the list, I'll nominate "Sick" by Ponta the Smith.

New update (also with Barry Richardson's name spelled correctly. I have no excuse for that one. I actually have "Theater of the Mind" on my desk staring at me right now, and I'm very familiar with his work. No idea why I mistyped that. Apologies to Mr. Richardson and his fans.)

Downloads should maybe have a separate category from DVDs.
One who specializes in downloads really did some outstanding stuff this year; "Grandpa's Coins 2" and "REViSiTED" by Marion Boykin (Mb217). Marion's prolific mind went into overdrive this year with one powerful worker after another. On top of that, he's a source of help and encouragement for everyone here who is into coin magic. Everything Mb offers is straightforward and awesome. Previews here... http://www.vinnymarini.com

Okay, after some thought, I will split this up into DVDs and Download Exclusives. The latter will be, for the most part, single trick downloads that are not also sold in DVD format. My original rationale for lumping everything together was that so many DVDs are also sold in download format these days (like, for example, the new "Daniel Garcia Projects"). But, I realize that the single trick move/download has become a genre unto itself, and it's ridiculous to have something like Chris Mayhew's "CAANDY" compete against, say, a three-and-a-half hour Max Maven set that has been in the works for years. Think of the DVD award as "Best Album" and the download as "Best Single." (Not a perfect analogy, but, hey...) Also, the ultimate purpose of threads like these is to throw some attention on what's been good in the past year, so the split will allow for more titles to be discussed.
Updated lists are below, and I'll throw a nomination into the download thread: Emran Riaz's "Shinobi Control." Best DVD of 2010 "Aldo on Trost, Vols 1 - 3" (Wild Colombini Magic) "Devious, Vols. 1 and 2, by Michael Close (Michael Close and L&L Publishing) "Extension of Me," Eric Jones (Kozmo Magic) "The Life and Times of Albert Goshman" (Magic by Gosh) "The Magic and Mentalism of Barry Richardson," Barry Richardson (L&L Publishing) "Malone Meets Marlo, Vols 1 - 6," Bill Malone (L&L Publishing) "Multiplicity," by Max Maven (L&L Publishing) "Opening Minds," Colin McLeod (Alakazam Magic) "Sick," by Ponta the Smith "The Vault," Docc Hilford (Inner Mind Productions) Best Download of 2010 "CAANDY," by Chris Mayhew (Vanishing Inc. download) "Grandpa's Coins 2," Marion Boykin (Vinni Marini) "Revisited," Marion Boykin (Vinni Marini) "Shinobi Control," Emran Riaz (Theory 11) |

Honestly, I just noticed Barrie's name being misspelled, and forgot what the rest of the thread was about. Marion Boykin's work HAS to be on this list, but it's awfully difficult to pick just one item. Right now, it's "Grandpa's Coins" but that could easily change tomorrow. Marion's work is that good. *jeep! ---Grandpa (Look for the review of "REVISITED" in this month's the Magic Touch )
