Hi all.
I'm working on magic with Hay's Book and am also reading 13 steps by Corinda.

I have 2 questions for the mentalists.
1. Besides 13 steps. Is there any other book that you would recomend I start reading?
2. What are some good beginner mentalist skills to work on?

If you're just getting started then Karl Fulves Self Working Mentalism is a great book and well worth a look.

Learn acting skills... specifically how to create and communicate a story (more than just telling it) and how to communicate things like tension and release. Also learn why to create a story.

My advice is that Hay is a good place to start, but that 13 Steps is something that can wait until much later. Take Robert Blake's advice (he beat me to the punch) and study (not just read, but STUDY) Cassidy's "Fundamentals of Professional Mentalism" (available from lybrary.com) first before you tackle Corinda, Annemann, Banachek and others. BTW, the Thirty-nine Steps recommended by leechiswell is INCLUDED in "Fundamentals."

We should really have a sticky for these three:

13 Steps, Fundamentals, and SwitchCraft.

All a new mentalist needs to get started.

I would like to add 'search'-the Café.
On second thoughts... why not have a third topic(unlocked/locked) just like,
NEW MENTALISTS FORUM
THE Café and NENTALISM-a growing...
NEW TO MENTALISM...
that should give a lot of info to Newcomers and a step by step approach.
Wot say?

Thank you all for the replies. The Café is just awesome.
I am learning the basics of magic at the moment. I have prior acting experience and in the future would like to become a mentalist. I am reading Hay and corinda.

With Hay I am learning sleights, cards, coins, balls, etc etc.. And with Corinda, well, he is a little bit hard to follow at times but his work is amazing.

I am trying to learn the basics of the art form. (Technique, tricks, patter, performance.)

A sticky for an aspiring mentalist would have been nice. Thank you all for your replies. They will give me years of reading and practice. Thank you.

The Sheil's Effect, then John's book, The Messiah Process.

Define what you are and where you want to go. The rest will fall into place.
