I have had a couple of inquiries from various subscribers to the museum about a set of cups that appeared on the big auction site. The listing is titled "Cups & Balls Copper - Mini"
Well, here's the review. They aren't copper. They are aluminum, copper plated. They come from India, and they have a MAK Magic label on the carton. They appear to be made by Giri or Fun Time Magic. They aren't awful, but they aren't copper. They are actually closer to a "midi" cup. They will easily accept a 2 1/8" ball as a final load. I thought I should inform the seller that his listing was misleading. I explained to him that I did not wish to return the cups, simply because I collect all versions of the cups and balls, but that I felt that he should change the listing to indicate that the cups were, indeed, aluminum with a copper plate. He addressed me with the wrong name and underscored his apparent illiteracy by asking me to return them. He stated that he gets his information from the manufacturers' descriptions. I told him to check the instructions and change the listing or suffer the consequences. Hence this review.

Thanks for the review and warning Bill. These cups have a slight Sherwood look to them.

Thanks Bill!
Really appreciate your vetting of these cups. To add to Bill's comments, I too contacted the seller asking for the final load size and dimensions of the cups. The response I received was along the lines of, "Sorry, I don't have an open box to measure these and it doesn't say on the box." Alrighty then...

Hmm, I couldn't find them. Maybe the big auction site isn't the one I'm thinking of....

If I had to repay Bill for every dollar he saved me from paying for sub-standard rubbish, I would be a poor fellow indeed.
Thank you, Sir, for another lifeline!

These are the cups in question in case anyone needed a visual aid:
it is a shame they don't just spin in copper as they at least come up with somewhat original designs. These are by the same company. Aluminum with copper plating (+TOXIC clearcoat). I rather like those ones in my collection.

Don't get me wrong. They aren't horrible cups. They are just misrepresented.
I don't understand why any seller ANYWHERE, in this day of internet connectivity, would not at least open one box to tell us what's in it. I was in retail before this guy even had a diaper to soil. Back then, I resisted the urge to make the fast buck, and instead, made the repeated buck. It takes a little longer, but it's darn well worth it. I can name two cup makers who are currently in business who have made their income by means of repeat business, which they have garnered by having consistently good products and by being nice to their customers. These are Brett Sherwood and Donnie Buckley.

Bill - what's the weight like on these (compared to a set of real copper cups?) Just curious what 25 bucks gets you in terms of the weight of the actual cup.

About .7 oz. A good copper cup the same size will weigh about 2.5 to 3.5 ounces.

BTW, as an aside, there is a set of Jerry Fohrman cups for sale there. They are very good cups.
Search for Amazing Aircraft Aluminum & Nickel Cups and Balls Set The seller does not identify them as Fohrman cups in the listing, but I recognized them, and he verified what they were in a message.

My main purchases have been from Donnie this year, but I recently purchased a set of Smooth Copper Cups from Brett. The stuff they sell is superb. Quality really is job # 1 with these gentlemen. The customer service, however, is even more impressive.

These are really nice cups. If they don't have the load balls with them, let me know. The loads in the originals were made by Leona Merrill, wife of the late color-changing knife maker (the knives changed color. I don't think Mr. Merrill did.)
The lister got some of the specs wrong. There were actually 50 sets made -- two runs of cups. I spoke to Jerry right after I bought mine. You got a good deal on these cups.

Got the cups today! Awesome! Got a couple of geek questions for Bill: Is this early CNC work? What year were these cups made? Also, what's up w/ the hallmark on the inside does the number refer to the set or run number? The hallmark in these cups is F1. Just curious.
Pleasantly surprised by their weight, size and tone. Happy to add them to the family! Been playing with them for the last hour, put a pic up on Facebook |

I don't know what year they were made. I think they are CNC work. I don't know how early, though. I believe Porper and Johnson Products were already on the market when these came out.
I also belive that F1 means the first run. They are very nice cups.
