Hi there
It's a while since I last posted, since then I feel I have come on bounds Read 13 steps, max mavern etc I can perform small routines( only to friends at the moment) One question/ problem I have is peeking, I find it really unnatural and get very self consous when I do this. I have treid coughing, wiping my brow , looking as though I'm in deep thought while peeking in my palm or wallet. But even though I havnt been caught out much I don't think I am doing it well Any tips please? Thanks |

Hi timski 523... What is your real name ?
Why do you wanna perform mentalism? Do you have background in other performing arts? Tell us a little bit about you before asking for tips. I predict that you will receive a lot of acid comments

Confidence ... the more you do it the more confident you get.
I started out in magic and would shake whenever I performed ... its your because your doing something sneaky and could get caught. When you get confident AND aren't bothered if your caught or not the shakes and nervousness go away. I think getting caught helped my confidence with magic and therefore mentalism at lot. As in I started not to care if I was caught. And ironically you don't get caught because your aren't telegraphing your nervousness. It really is important you shouldn't be afraid to fail... especially in mentalism. CONFIDENCE One more tip .. get caught .. magicians and mentalists need somewhere to be bad in order to get good.

Lie is part of out job as artist, so gain information is just a detail in the whole world of performance. That little detail ( the p$·k) isn't the important thing, the important thing are the memories that you will create in your performance. Now... theory is important, but experience and practice with persons also is crucial ( especially in Mentalism). You NEED to try things, even FAIL ( we can do that without fear). Remember... we are doing extraordinaries things with our minds . Welcome, have fun and use your acting skills ,build a character and do things without fear.

I used the following approach to get over that same issue.
While the spectator is asked to write something, try giving the impression that it is irrelevant if you see it BUT important that no one else knows… Make it overly obvious that you are going out of your way NOT to see the information. Do your business (now with zero pressure since it does not matter if you saw the information) as casually as possible and clarify that “nobody here knows your thoughts, not even myself…” From here on out, it’s all up to your acting abilities. Hope this helps. |

Hi Tim,
Sorry for the self-promotion but I have an essay entitled "Justifying Your Gaze" in my ebook Suggestabilities. The book consists of three essays, each followed by an effect that illustrates factors in the essay. I think there is a lot of information that you will find helpful. There is an small banner ad in the ebook section that will take you to the full ad with more detailed information. If you have any questions feel free to post them or PM me. Best, Bill |

If your not getting caught and you've put in the thought that you obviously have, just keep doing it.
I have the same problem with Acidus Globus, it's hard to believe that it's invisible when you looking at the whole entire billet. Just keep doing it and you'll get more and more confident. Also, if you fail that's great, take the opportunity to talk with the person about why it didn't work. I do this all the time with my wife, if I mess soemthing up we'll work on it together and I end up doing much better than I ever would have without her. Also videotape yourself.

I think how and when to peek is the most common problem.
Think of a REASON you'd look at whatever you need to, whenever you need to. Now figure out a good way to slide into the reason for peeking. It's sort of like the method/reason for peeking is the actual (backstage) apex of the trick, so you have to figure out what your perfect reason is, then work BACKWARD to figure out how to get into that position seamlessly. Your approach, either verbally or technically, will be dictated by the requirements of your reason. At one time, I had a hard time figuring out how and when to read a tear, and eventually figured out that, if the pcs. were hard to tear, I could get away with a natural look at the hands trying to tear the pcs, as I got exasperated. Since the action was natural within the situation (can't tear the paper) the peeking became invisible, unnoticed, unremembered. The best, ideal reason to take a look should allow you a second look/peek if you need it. I'm talking as I get my peek, and that's doing 2 things at once. Not a good thing in my case. I have noticed, for me, that if I can get 2 peeks at a name, I don't forget that name later on. Without that second peek, it's a crap-shoot, that name may well NOT get poked into my Memory bank. 2 Peeks: solid. I think it's all a matter of puttering and thinking until you get it right for you, then apply it to real world performing. What's comfortable for you may not fit others, and vice-versa. Good luck.

What an excellent opportunity for a shameless plug!
There are a lot of nicely motivated ways to get a peek in the later Switchcraft supplements, which presently are included with every copy of Switchcraft. Elliott |

1) use an internal script
2) make sure your actions are congruent 3) use time misdirection 4) have a motivation for every action 5) make use of the offbeat moment not every utility device and technique will suit your mannerism. play with methods and find a ***k that works with you. sometimes you will read about a technically brilliant piece but unless it suits your mannerism it will "feel" wrong everytime.

There is very little I can add to the advice that Bill, Tom, Elliott and Smoking Camel have offered other than to say that the audience must perceive a logical reason for every word, gesture and action you use -- specifically a logical reason OTHER THAN allowing you to gain access to the information, or execute some necessary maneuver required to accomplish the effect -- i.e., those words, gestures and actions must have a natural/rational purpose apart from the accomplishment of the effect in order to become "invisible."

As mentioned earlier, get Bill Cushman's "Suggestibilities" and Elliott Bressler's "Switchcraft".
For me, that perfect moment usually comes after I do the initial tear, when I tell the spec to "hold out your right hand" (for me to put the pieces of the torn-up billet in). They look down at their hand, and when they do, I'm home-free. |

The other thing I'll mention is something Millard Longman taught me. Sometimes the most natural thing in the world is to look at your hands and we are risking incongruency when we DON'T look there.
The other, other thing I'll mention and is really a summation of a lot of the good advice above, is a quote from Kenton Knepper that I probably share way to often. And that quote is "Meaning is the best misdirection." Involve your audience in an intriguing plot and you are golden! |

Mym favorite cover line as I peek during a CT, "Alright, I'll need you to swallow these." Or, "Chewing on the pieces aids concentration."
