When we were kids before games had batteries we often invented our own amusements. One was a mental guessing game based on nothing but our own imagination. We would sit in a circle and one by one think of an object, and the other would try and guess what it was – 20 Questions without the questions. If a new kid were playing we had a secret agreement that whatever he guessed was correct. Then we would have him pick an object, “easily seen but not connected with any of us.” With the field of options reduce one of us could usually guess it in a couple of tries. With no trickery involved we were amazed at how accurate we were in later “mind-reading” tests. I like to believe that these skills served us well in later life – being able to “read” people in conversation or debate.

The questions is, with the complete takeover of games with electronic devices and avoidance of learning though interpersonal interactions, how do young people ever develop those skills – if at all? Maybe they do – even have a better way.

furthering the story …

my Dad was a very fine poker player – having sent home double his paycheck every month when in the Navy in WWII. One day he interrupted our game and asked told one friend, “Think of any playing card without a picture on it. Form an image of it in your mind and hold it there. Focus on just the suit, Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts or Spades. Now stare at that mental picture and the number of that card. Start at one and slowly count up to that number in your head and stop.” He then named the card!

There are some things that one learns only by doing.
"the more one pretends at magic, the more awe and wonder will be found in real life." Arnold Furst
