Here is what i've read about Baker's version
from another group. He goes through the audience asking each to think of a card (no real cards used) and names each one as he goes along the row with a surprising number of hits. I realy would like to know more about it... Ps.is he{Robert Baker} the same guy who wrote the book 'They Call It Hypnosis'? Yaniv Deautsch |

I'm not totally convinced by Derren Browns pure psychological forces, but his Insesible deal on THE DEVILS PICTUREBOOK elicits a tremendous response.

I would also like to learn more about this. It sounds too good to be true, like a "snipe hunting game" for mentalists! Is the book worth getting. From the sound of the effect you would think the reaction to those who've used it or seen it would be much greater than it is. This makes me a little suspicious. Although it seems the thought-of-card in wallet routine (Knepper? Kolossal Killer?) would be an obvious out. Although I stay away from that myself because of the wallet I use. I'm interested to know more outs. Although I'd probably just have the spectator try and read my mind. If they fail, no biggie.

Jonathan, which book are you referring to? Devil's Picturebook is a video lecture by Derren Brown, and amidst a lot of great card magic (not beginner stuff), contains a number of powerful and effective effects based on psychological forces. The Baker version certainly sounds interesting. Can anyone direct me to this work? Does Robert Baker have a book, lecture, etc?

I was referring to the book of the Harbinesque effect. If it's as good as it sounds I should buy it, but the reactions here don't seem to fit with what I would predict they would be based on the description of the effect which makes me curious.

I have Stanton Carlisle's original article here in front of me. I can't see how it would work, barring real PSI (and that's not at all reliable, if it exists). It was a joke put out by a fading mentalist to boost his reputation. It was the 70s, and the height of Geller's fame...

Is this true? Does anyone else have any experiences with Harbinesque?

It sounds like I use a variation of Harbinesque that was taught to me by Kenton Knepper.
I use it in my repertoire of psychological forces. Like all PF's, it's not 100% reliable, but when it hits, it's amazing!

GothicBen, which issue of the Magigram are you reading Harbinesque in?

The idea that the Harbinesque article was a joke does not make sense to me. I find it hard to imagine Stanton Carlisle making up a fake article on Edwin Hooper's Magigram just to pull people's leg, fading reputation or not. If he truly wanted to fake something up to support his fading reputation, as GothicBen states, would he write about something which few people will believe anyway? And if it was a joke, would he center it around a deceased and highly respected magician, as was Robert Harbin, the inventor of the Zig-Zag Lady Illusion.
The methodology may sound out of this world, but anyone familiar with the working of visualisation practises and affirmation techniques for mobilising the unconscious mind will recognise the methodology. I have used it repeatedly myself with good effect. GothicBen, do you call Harbinesque a joke as a matter of personal opinion, or based on some statement to that effect published by the author or publisher? |

Where is this variation written? Is it in one of Knepper's books?

This is not exactly Harbin's method but it is just as good in it's own way.
I have only invented two tricks in my entire life. This is one of them. Fan a deck of cards toward you.Remove any card and say "Name a card" rush them a bit so they have no time to think. They will name a card at random. You make a joke of it and say "Very good. I'll show you another trick" Replace the card in the fan without showing it. You will get a big laugh. This gag is actually in the Royal Road to Card Magic. However, you remember the card they name. Later on, whether it be half an hour later, 3 weeks later or even 5 years later you are in a strong position to do a miracle. What the miracle may be is up to you. The principle is that if you rush this spectator in the same way as you did last time he will name the same card again! It virtually always works. The same person will name the same card again. I normally do a brainwave deck with ordinary cards by reversing the selected card in the deck. However you can do anything. Have the card sealed in an envelope which they keep. When they open it and find the card they named they will be quite astonished. This is an utter knockout. It was the only trick I invented in my life until a few weeks ago. I believe I may have invented the best version of Out of This World yet. However I refuse to disclose it until I have tried it out on a few laymen first. I want to make sure I haven't invented a pipe dream. I do know the above is good though. I have used it for years. Almost Harbin but not quite. I actually thought the Harbin thing was that you flash the bottom card to someone then a few moments later you get them to name a card and that will always be the one. I was told to put the ace of clubs on the bottom of the deck as this worked better. I have never tried this thing but I think it would probably work because strange things happen on a subliminal level. |
