In the genre of flim-flam/con artist/gambling films, another film by John Dahl, who directed "Rounders," is "The Last Seduction."
We're getting away from the original theme of this thread though, no? |

Now that we branched out to con movies in addition to card scenes, we can also add T.V.
Does anyone recall the wonderful X-Files episode called, “The Amazing Maleeni” from season 7?
"Is there any point to which you would wish to draw my attention?"
"To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time." "The dog did nothing in the night-time." "That was the curious incident," remarked Sherlock Holmes. |

Just remembered...
In the movie "The Flim-Flam Man" (that I mentioned in my earlier post) Jay Ose has a small part, and if I'm not mistaken, was also credited as technical adviser! |

Ose was technical advisor to "The Cincinatti kid". He does a demo showing one of the actresses some stuff in a promo for the movie, doing a dl and pulling it off as a second.

Thanks. Just saw Matchstickmen last night.
Honestly, I was underwhelmed. I saw the whole con coming as it happened. The only thing that was any surprise to me was his reaction in the end.

Duck Soup. Groucho spreads the cards and tells Margaret Dumont to take a card. She does and says, "What do I do with it?" Groucho answers, as eh places the remainder of the deck into his pants pocket, "Whatever you want, I have 51 more of them"
"Now here's the man with the 25 cent hands, that two bit magician..."

There is a great poker scene on the ship in "The Immigrant" with Charlie Chaplin. He deals using terrible sleight of hand, but incredible misdirection, winning the stakes and the big bad guy's gun just at the right moment.

"5 Card Stud" with Dean Martin and Robert Mitchum.
The scene where Mitchum pushes the chair up against the card table and gives himself away. "Risky Business" in the begining when Cruise and company are playing poker. Funny scene.

I was streaming some old movies off of netflix and this is not impressive but a cute poker scene. In Curly Sue there is a poker scene where she and James Belushi is playing poker with the maid. Curly Sue had a shuffle sequence where in the end she got the 4 aces.

I love the movie Shade with Stallone. It's a homage to Dai Vernon with reference and jokes with Charlie Miller saying he's a dice man and almost every character names are famous magicians. It looks like a movie about poker but it's a movie about cardsharps ansd magicians.
I like the the scene where a young Stevens cuts a card while saying nothing ventured... nothing gained. Slim p.s. Also a citation from Erdnase in the opening sequence and a glimpse of the Expert at the card table in Stallone's suitcase. |

I've always been partial to the introduction of Edward G Robinson's character in "Cincinatti Kid", where the young hothead who's just been beaten by Edward shouts out his disbelief and wonders how he did it. Eddie just looks at him and calmly says; "you paid to watch, kid - lessons are extra"
Classic. Also, in the movie Honky Tonk (1932?) Clark Gable actually performs the monte toss in one scene - if memory serves me right... Mikael Johansson

The Sting is the movie that got it all started for me. As a kid, of course I loved magic, I saw The Sting on TV when I was about 13 and the scene where Gondorff/Scarne is warming up in their car just hooked me. I always lived for the spring when Copperfield's new special would air, but this was so much cooler than ANYTHING I had seen him do.

The scene in Laurel & Hardy's "Oliver the Eighth"
The butler Jitters(who's crazy) shows Stan a trick with "Invisible Cards". Jitters has Stan show the trick to Ollie, and Ollie slaps the cards out of Stan's hands. The butler picks the cards up from the floor and as he walks away, Stan tells him he dropped one. I first read about this in Bill Abbott's book on Cocktail Card Magic. I found and watched the movie online. Great stuff.

W.C. Fields has some funny card gambling bits in several of his movies. I recently watched one in "My Little Chickadee". His character wants to get into a poker game in the back of the saloon, but lacks a stake. He spies a lone gambler setting at a table with a deck of cards. Fields wanders over and asks if the man wants to cut high card for $100.
Fields doesn't have any cash and writes the man an I.O.U.---saying he usually doesn't do this, but he will just this once. The gent takes his IOU, but then lays a six shooter on the table---warning Bill that the IOU better be good. The man then cuts to a King and shows it to Fields, who protests: "don't show it to me--this is a gentleman's game". Fields then cuts to a deuce which he does not show. Undaunted, Fields replaces his cut on the talon announcing that his card was an Ace. The other player protests that he did not see the card. At this point Fields says: "Here, I'll show it to you". --searching through cards and pulling out an Ace like that's proof of what he claimed. It is absolutely ludicrous, but funny as hell---and typical of Fields' humor. This movie is also the origin of one of Fields' well known movie quotes concerning cards. Later in the movie, he invites a rube to engage in a two handed poker game. The potential sucker asks "is a game of chance?"---to which Fields quips: "Not the way I play it!" There's also a poker game in the movie "Mississippi" where Fields is dealt a draw poker hand of four Aces. He draws one card and to his surprise gets a fifth Ace. He discards it several times--stealing another card, but he always gets a another Ace. At the showdown his opponents also have so many Aces in their hands that Fields folds his hand in disgust for fear of being accused a cheat. W.C. Fields was a one of a kind comedic genius, and it's a shame not many of this generation have been exposed to his films. Cheers
