I have devised a method for the following effect. My questions: Has this been done before? Is it worth putting into production?
Effect: The spectator freely selects a page from a book containing a large number of all different Sudoku puzzles. The mentalist instantly solves the puzzle. Genuine free choice of puzzle. No force. No memory or calculations required. The book of puzzles can be any length. I am still in the fairly early stages of development and don't want to waste my time if this effect is already out there. Effect A spectator selects a random Sudoku puzzle and copies it onto a large blank grid so that everyone can see the puzzle. The magician studies the grid for a few seconds and then turns his back to the puzzle. The magician then begins to instantly call out numbers to the spectator and the entire Sudoku puzzle is completed 'blind' by the magician. As an extra challenge, the spectator can even be instructed to lie and miswrite the puzzle on the grid at the beginning of the routine - not only will the magician be able to tell which digits are incorrect - but also what they should be!!! Remember: The spectator genuinely has a free choice of any Sudoku puzzle and every puzzle can clearly be seen to be completely different. The magician instantly calls out 'correct' answers to the puzzle. No 'fishing' or 'outs' required. No mathematics or memory skill required to perform the trick. The secret is completely self-working leaving the magician fully focused on presentation. Packs small and plays big! - A complete 10 minute stage routine with drama, suspense, intrigue, and what appears to be great skill, and all with this paperback book that fits in your pocket! |

Thanks Caliban - this sounds like the same basic effect I have in mind but with some nice presentational ideas thrown in. I'll check out Justin Monehen's book. I suspect my approach is probably based on a similar principle.

HI Michael,
Just noticed your post from 2010. I created/perform "Sudoku for Simpletons" (where I'm the "simpleton") some years ago...spectator turns to any page; puzzles are mostly filled in, with every block of 9 missing one number. I tell them the missing digits (different from puzzle to puzzle). I'd be interested in knowing what you're doing. (My routine is in "The Real Magic of Silicon Valley, volume 1") |

An impromptu version of a Sudoku effect called "Swindle Sudoku" can be found in my e-book "NINE" available at Lybrary.com at http://www.lybrary.com/nine-p-981.html

The effect you describe was marketed by Curt Frye quite a few years ago.
