By way of allegory ...
people who live in the crowded city complain about the smog, but are accustomed to muggings, purse-snatching and surly messages on every wall. They talk about the mountain they cannot see, relying on the opinions of others who have also never seen it. There are, of course, priests and seers and salesman who will sell you a ticket there. Some people leave to try and find the mountain, or just to leave the smog behind. Those on the mountain look down at the city hidden by the smog and talk about the wonders of the city: the availablity of many things, the theater and art, and lots of friends. Some go down to the city to wander in the source of smog, but never speak of the mountain for no one will believe. In either case, smog is the main topic of conversation. Humans are such silly folk!

The word crooks is a hard word to use, but I´m totally agree that many give some products a very good review, and it turns out to be a bad product. I see many of the creators of different products always gives each other good reviews, therefor I have quit listen to many of the experienced mentalist here when it comes to reviews. |

Whatever their reasons for leaving the board, I think that people should respect their decision. Both pablo and Iain are friends of mine and I know that they do have their reasons. Internet forums aren't the centre of the magic universe and sometimes it can be good to step back from them for a while. As valuble as places like this are, they can also become quite consuming and self destructive

One thing to consider when it comes to reviews is your performance style and character and the creator and his target audience.
for example, Dick Christian is the man when it comes to book tests. he reviews a product and says its great, if I bought it and didn't think it was all that great because its method was old hat and I performed it and it is "obvious" to my audience. should I say Dick is aiding the crook of a creator who took me for a product that uses a commonly known method? NO, I shouldn't because Dick's skill with a booktest and character justify his using it, mine does not. therefore, even though I really like booktests and have bought my share including Dick's lecture notes (which is a wonderful lesson in the types and histery of) I don't perform them because they don't fit me. so take the reputation and type of performance character of the reviewer and creator into account when purchasing. a magician dabbling into mentalism vs. a pure mentalist who would I believe continuing with the booktest example? depends am I also primarily a magician or am I a pure mentalist? now is the creator a magician or a mentalist? if he is a mentalist and I'm a magician can I reconcile the different mindset needed? and vice versa. Please note, I only used Dick as an example because I admire his experience and knowledge of booktests and am no way implying anything negative towards, about, etc. to him. my best, Walter |

This subject can be debated for pages, but the reality is a lot of good people have left this forum. And more a just not participating as much as they have in the past.
Funsway, I believe you are not the only person that has difficultly writing, others may have similar problems and language being one of them. Also most members I believe are press for time and want to convey a quick message, so there is probably more typo's and errors then someone sitting down and writing book (see I just did a run-on sentence with bad grammar). Consider the format and be a little more forgiving. Just suggestion. JerryB |

For what anything I say is worth, good on you John. I count myself lucky to have you as a friend and a large part of me can't help but feel that people who leave the Café are like babies throwing their dummies out of the pram.
I come and go without feeling the need to make big announcements - when I find the place gets me down I leave for a while and then come back when I'm ready - simple. To be honest, there's so much repetition of old arguments and posts I seldom contribute but I still enjoy checking in and you are part of the reason why. |

Thanks Jim. That's fun -- been around for years so is hardly "current" by Tom's definition.
Of the 5,400,030 definitions posted by anyone who cares to, I would not be surpised if Tom entered a couple of thousand. Isn't there a contest for newly made up words now that Bush is out of office? "Dignitude" is one of my favorites.

I agree that the Café has been used (effectively) for marketing purposes.
I believe that deliberately posting a "good-bye" in the way that Amira did, was a rather transparent way to try to garnish sympathy. I enjoyed Pablo's posts every now and then, but quite frankly, I don't think that many of his "contributions" were very significant at all. Many people become self-proclaimed "rising stars" on the green board. I think he will be back when he has some more things to market. |
