I've heard that it can help to buy additional domains that might also be targets for your type of work.
So if I was going to do restaraunt work in Denver, in addition to TheAmazingEd,com, I might want to also get: -- RestarauntMagic, com -- DenverRestarauntMagic, com etc. (A) Is this an effective strategy? (B) If so, how would you use these to the greatest effectiveness (other than simply putting a redirect to your main site)? Ed |

By themselves, they do not help if all they do is forward to your main site. Also, if they are direct clones of your main site, Google notices the identical text and actually penalizes you for this scheme.
Best use is to make multiple unique sites using specific keywords on each mini site. This way each domain stands on its own and is keyword heavy in it's own niche. |

You live in a town that has a population of 90,000 people. I did a search of the magicians in your area, and you have little competition to speak of. Just how many domains do you actually need to blanket this teritory? IMHO You are trying to swatt a fly with a baseball bat.

Actually, Al, my thoughts were:
-- Competition _is_ coming, especially when they see how wildly successful I am!! (cough, cough ....) So if I grab domains now, it gives me an edge. -- These are the search terms a person looking for magic in my area would likely use. So I have a domain name that contains the keywords, and a page with unique text containing my keywords on each site. -- I do intend to branch out into a couple of different offerings (parties, schools, libraries, City functions, Parks and Rec classes, to name a few ....), and can eventually use multiple sites. Although the names would be similar (yumamagic and yuma magician, for example) I could easily make them about different things. I was trying to avoid getting penalized, as Scott pointed out, by simply having multiple domains that were nothing more than gateways or redirects to my main site. And thanks also for warning about the "clone" effect. Ed |

You might (or might not) have one site for all your "products." The other sites would be for a specific product or a specific line of products. That is, one site for your family friendly shows in the Yuma area. Another, perhaps, for restaurants. Another, perhaps, for adult shows. If you're planning on working in Denver, you might want a separate site or sites for that area.
Be sure, if buying a relevant site, to spell "restaurant" correctly. Thom |

A cheaper way to get similar (but maybe not exactly) the same results is to have ONE website and have each webpage geared for different key words example:
http://www.mymagic.com. The main page key word family magician http://www.mymagic.com/RestarauntMagic.com. Key word would be "Restaraunt Magic" you would also use the keyword in bold text on the top of the page along with bringing it up several time in the text on this page and NOT use any other keywords as well. You could do this on several page of yoursite very easily and cheaper... This creates diffrent keywords for each landing page and works quite well! |

It’s getting difficult to get the domain names you want these days, I had a domain when the Internet first became popular: back then domain names were $50.00 each and you needed to wait a day or two to confirm them for some reason.
Today most unique.com names are taken, or being sold at auction; purchasing domain names now for future use in my opinion is an investment. I am manly a Ventriloquist so after a day of searching for a domain that would fit me, I picked “NotMovingMyLips.com”, I also purchased “ImNotMovingMyLips”.com for safety from competitors and people that may be confused, both go to the same web site. |

I'm no expert, but I really don't think the words you choose for your domain name are very relevant. Look at Amazon.com. It hardly screams "book store", but it works just fine. Choose any domain that sound good to you and then use SEO to drive business there.

Its based on many things: key word revelance, name, page rank, Website headline being bold... Its actually quite complicated.
Some people have a high page rank but are several pages back because there website pages have not enough of the same keyword. Others are high up just because of the name of there website.. |
