I've been working on some copper silver routines, and started thinking about what those effects would look like if the "copper" was "gold".
Would it be more impressive to see if I made gold coins instead of copper? Would the color change be enough to be visually impressive? Would the coins be too expensive? or would plated coins hold up to the wear and tear? Does anyone sell a S/G coin?

Hey John,
I've been doing the Thieves & Sheep for kids for awhile and just this year, found some really beautiful Gold plated coins from China with the Chinese new year symbols on the back of each coin...I gotta tell you using them creates one heck of a story plus I was already using Gold plated quarters which got some great attention but nothing like these Chinese coins.... Hello John
There are two types of gold coins: the ones that were dipped into melted gold and came out shiny and the real gold coins with a more tamed shine. Gold coins of the first category (sometimes used by some magicians) are of such a shine that it is difficult for an audience to tell the difference between a gold coin and a silver coin. The second type costs more but its value keeps going up when it is not the case for the first type. I bought several circulated gold coins in 2000 and they are now worth at least twice the (expensive) price I had paid for them. Just one tip buy them "circulated" for they cost less and, otherwise, the scratches brought to them when performing will make them lose value. It may seem expensive at first (but not more than some Sherwood cups or some large illusion) but it keeps on gaining in value and their use are a real reputation maker.

Gold and Silver do not give you a great contrast. Gold and the old copper coins give you great contrast. See my Twilight Zone Wild Coin on volumne 2 of the NYCMS DVD series, and a portable version in our latest offerings, coming out in a few months. You can see how nice the old copper (bronze) and gold compliment each other.

I've alwasy had a good response to calling them "old coins" and "new coins" -- ven tried "warm coins" and "cold coins." In some Medieval routines I would call them "black" and "white"
The difference is enhanced and I don't have to polish them

How about a coloured coin? I release an unusual colour may arise suspicion as to it's authenticity but for contrast they're pretty good.
Sol Stone has a nice quick routine using a purple dollar & a regular one. I believe it's on his close up DVD. |
