I'm at one trip in but dangerously near two since I added a Jet Set Backdrop and Happie Amp to my Birthday Party Show.
I'm curious, how many trips does it take to carry in your show? -Mary Mowder |

Just one!
I walk in with my briefcase that sets atop a rolling case as does my tripod/tabletop. Can you put the Happie Amp inside a shoulder bag?

Well, it depends on if I have a crew of unloaders and a forklift....ha! I'm kidding, I'm pretending to be one of those cool magicians who set up a huge stage for birthday parties. I actually can do it in one trip for little kids and two for older kids.

Mary, You should check out one of these:
They make different sizes. It folds up completely for the car. I use it if the distance is great and I'm carrying extra stuff, if I need to carry PA equipment for corporate shows, etc. There are different sizes. I use the mini which carries a ton if you expand it. If you have questions about it, let me know. Heck you can even come over and check it out (or borrow it) if you want.

I'm still at one trip, but I'm using a cart. It's one of those that converts to a hand truck. It carries my big trunk and my sound system and mic stand. In my free hand I carry a second suitcase and a folding tray stand. It's getting to be too much and I'm thinking of ways to condense. I used to pack smaller, just a rolling trunk and a folding table. But when I added Henry (a full sized vent figure) and a fair sized sound system, I found myself carrying more stuff than I'm really comfortable with. Like I said, it's still one trip, but it's becoming a chore. I'm really wanting to be a 'circus in a suitcase', but it's just gotten bigger and I don't know what to cut. A smaller sound system would be a good place to start. I have more sound than I really need for almost any birthday show. I'm thinking of going to a belt amp for birthdays and day cares. Plus, I'm going to stop bringing my juggling clubs because I'm not good enough for it to really add to the show.
Posted: Dec 5, 2010 12:46am Hey Frank, that's kinda like mine. It is a big help. For my strolling medicine show it's absolutely necessary. |

Hi Mary,
It depends on the kind of show. When it is a birthdayshow or close-up it takes one trip. The stageshow )with p.a. system, boxes, backdrop etc) itt akes several trips to the car. And that is only because I have two hands and haven't found a way yet to carry my mixer, two boxes, cabels, mic and backdrop in once. Of course with a touch of my wand my magic case will vanish from my car and produce right on stage It intriges me this thinking about how many to carry, play big and pack small conversations. I feel it takes what is nescesarry for the best show I can give. Here in Holland there is a thing abour bad sound, bad sound system. We have big concerts in stadium where because of the enviremont the ound is really bad. Unfortunally I can not carry my p.a. in once but I am more then happy to walk that extra mile. If it all comes down to me and my magic I only have to make one trip, from car to stage. best regards, Ronald |

Frank, that is so cool. I hadn't been thinking in that direction so it's a good addition to the wish list.
snowpuppy, I like the idea of a strip down show at a different price. As soon as I clean up some of my sound problems (so I can reasonably charge for sound) I will start a two step price based on equipment. I currently have variations in price based on time alone. - Mary Mowder |

Mary,
I have a Home-Depot Dolly for conventions and conference which I "work" and have far more stuff than most. I am often called for my Sound System, Lighting System, Backdrop System, and Projection System. So to minimize the many trips I have two Dollies, and an AV Lighting stand. I have everything in cases or storage boxes, Wires, Tape, Extra Bulbs (Electrical Box). Now for my Birthday Show. I Now have Two Lefler Tables and A Laflin Table. (I Normally use one Lefler table and the Laflin Table which holds everything I need except the Illusion.) I use the Chair suspension with a Hula-hoop. I use the Jeff Jones Backdrop. So I strap the Backdrop on my back carry one case to the door, After I see where I am to set-up, go back to the car for the second case and the Hula-Hoop, then the third trip for the chair suspension. And back to the car for the Rabbit. I use to be able to carry two cases, not anymore, I use to Use a Fender 150 (Another trip) not any more (I use the Mackie SMR 150 which replaced the Roland CM30, Which Replaced the Fender 150) With this Second Lefler Table, I can roll both Tables, have Backdrop, and a second trip for the suspension system, and a third trip for the rabbit if I can't put the rabbit on top of the rolling table. ( I bring everything to the door then move in and set-up. Since I pitch and advertise these things this is what I must do and I do charge the high end for my area, $50 more for longer distances. I also (sometimes) get help from the client's husband, which I like. (Obviously Moms book me.) Mary if you are interested in what I have in those tables, PM me. -Dennis Posted: Dec 5, 2010 6:15am BTW, Mary, I no longer do the Wiz-Kote because it was another trip to the car for this item and the recover Treasure Chest. It also added to my set-up time. Also, I am contented to do one Show a day or two shows at the same location. Additional trips may be included if the show is a larger, better paying one such as a school, or fundraiser where I set-up my Spider Backdrop, and other illusions I will use.

Hey, lets have a pack flat vrs big prop debate. We never talk about that.
I make a minimum of 2 trips for my birthday party show. My super deluxe package is 5 trips! The cart Frank referenced is the best purchase I have ever made. I bought it for schools but it has saved me many times when a birthday client has picked out a spot in the back of a large yard.

Usually one trip unless I hear Ken is also being offered the job and then I also offer my client the Double Super six trip to car Entertainment Extravaganza Package. It is the same show but in a lot more cases. I have not lost one gig to Ken since I created it.

I make one trip unless I take my amp then it is two trips, but I find that at most large venues there is a pa system, so I usually only take my show, and my lavalier microphone. My show consists of a brief case, juggling bag, jump stool, top hat, and now my Pizza box. I am usually in, and out in an hour.

For me, it's a minimum of 2 trips. If the Birthday party is at a place like a park or pizza parlour I use a hand truck and I can make it in one trip. On the rare occasion where I need a backdrop or sound system I need to add in another trip or 2.

Birthday parties, one trip with out a trolly.
Schools shows and other shows, one trip because I also use the Rock n Roller! What an invention. It would take me 4-5 trips for my larger shows but with the rock n Roller just one. What a back saver! Holly crap Dennis! I'm glad I don't have to compete with you for birthdays around here! lol Tommy

One trip, two trips if the venue is upstairs. 5 minutes setting time. I guess I'm lucky that I realised that a flashy backdrop and elaborate stage set would totally undermine my stage persona. I also dislike the idea of those pull-up banners and signwritten tables, so that's a bit less to carry.
