Hi All,
I have recently purchased David Roths Ultimate Coin Magic DVDs Vol 1-4. There are some amazing routines on these DVDs and they have given me a new found respect for Mr. Roth's absolute creative genius. For me he is the greatest coin man there is. Bar none. Ok so maybe Mickey silver has a better retention pass and walks down a different path to Mr Roth. Maybe coins look prettier in the hands of Ponta the Smith. But this guy has created so much wonderful coin magic that for me, he is in a league of his own. My two questions are this. Of all Mr Roths routines, firstly which one is your personal favourite and secondly, which one do you think plays best (or is the strongest magically) for lay people. If possible and if you have the time, could you say where they are published. For me my personal favourite is the The Globe. It's on Volume 3 of the Ultimate Set and I think there is a performance on the Coinvention DVD. The routining is perfection for me. Every move choreographed perfectly. As for what plays the strongest I only do one of his routines at present which is shelled coins across which I originally learnt from Worlds Greatest magic Shelled Coins. I plan to do more and I'm hoping that any answers to my questions could point me and maybe others in the right direction. Kind regards, Sean |

My personal favourite is his Purse & Glass routine - It's taught on one of his Expert Coin Magic DVDs and to me it has everything a routine should have. When I first saw it performed I couldn't begin to imagine how he'd achieved it, he is as you say a creative genius.

David Roth put on a Great performance on the Letterman Show in 2007. He did coins across, chink a chink and a nice one coin routine with a jumbo coin ending. I like all of his work. When you meet these coin guys in person, their coin magic looks 100% better than in the the videos.:

I'm still working on the Roth material, but I'm enjoying the Okito work he did (I'm in a bit of an Okito box phase at the moment which is probably why.)
For me, one of the strongest routines for lay people is his coin in bottle, where he turns the bottle inside out at the end. Incredible stuff. Too bad we couldn't make it to the coin symposium, Sean! I hear it was a great time over there.

Hey Andrew, would have loved to have got over there. Just way too busy right now. Should be good for Blackpool in the new year. You going? Okito work is something I definately have planned for the future. I've played around with Tim Fehers routine which is really nice. Right now I'm working on a routine by Curtis Kam (another incredibly creative coin guy)
Paul, thanks for the link. I've seen that one before but it's always nice to see again. Pete, The Purse and glass routine sounds interesting straight away. I just looked it up on Youtube and found this nice performance by female magician http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fi8oh_lhkV4. |

David is THE coin master "par excellence" in my generation. This didn't prevent other great magicians to exist (Curtis Kam, Mike Gallo, Michael Rubinstein, Reed McClintock, Doug Conn, Kainoa Harbottle, Gary Kurz, Al Schneider, Marion Boykin etc...)
His two most magical routines are (IMHO) the portable hole and the Tuning Fork. In fact, I think that the tuning fork is the best and most magical coin routine I have ever seen. Now in the following generations, next to several technically gifted or creative magicians, we have a new generation of real performers like Alex Conradi, Eric Jones, Miguel Angel Rea, Armando Lucero. Is it surprising to see that David Roth has one way or the other been an inspiration for them at one point or the other in their magic life?

Sean - yeah, I'm only in the UK for a year so I might as well head to Blackpool before I head back to the states. Looking forward to it as I've never been!

My favorite routine from Mr. Roth is the "coins through the table" in The ultimate coin magic vol.1
You can always show the hand that goes under the table clean.. I love it.. For lay people I believe that "The metamorphosis change" from the 3d dvd of "The expert coin magic" seems so magical.. You place a coin on the table, wave your hands above it and the coin has changed.. So simple routine and so effective..

David Roth is a true Master. He has been given the gift of all necessary ingredients and he has produced prolifically with them. Very few can come close to all he has thought of, created, taught and presented in the way of coin magic. As my friend Etienne sorta says here and indeed, most others have been inspired by Roth's work in one way or another. Of course greatness can still spring eternal and pop-up anywhere and it has but Roth's contribution to the craft can never be overlooked, as a matter of fact you can't look any particular way and not see a lot of David Roth somewhere in that direction. Even his closest contemporaries are really his students, as most of us have been here and there big and small.
For me, there are several of Roth's work that are brilliant but none any finer IMHO than his Tuning Fork, it is perfection in all ways as to coin magic and its overall presentation. Brilliant to see and to think about. But to each his own and any road you take when it comes to the greatness of David Roth will be a good one, and nearly everyone's road forward will include some of his.

I'd have to go with The Portable Hole first and The Purse and the Glass first.
Speaking of his Letterman appearance, I tought it was cool how the audience burst into spontanious applause when he produced the jumbo coin. I may have spelled spontaneeeus wrong. |

Mr Roth has so many great routines hard to pick only a few. For laymen I think some of his strongest routines are his Shelled coins across page 62, A funnel coin in bottle page 44, Squash page 139, The Fugitive coins page 156, and my personal favorite The Eraser coin page 152 All in Expert coin Magic.

I can remember seeing Mr. Roth at the castle way back when. I was there every evening and made it into most of his shows.
Everything he did was magical. As I recall the best audience response came from the portable hole and the tuning fork. Absolutely brilliant! My personal favorite is the globe, don't have the exact name on hand. |

David can be considered the Father of modern coin magic. He took the old material, revamped it, and gave it a whole new spin, in addition to creating many new ideas and plots. All of the coin magicians today owe a debt of gratitute for the foundation that David paved. There have been many great coin magicians that have followed in David's footsteps, and they have generated many new ideas using the building blocks that Roth gave us, but no one has ever been able to duplicate to date the ability to perform magic theatre with coins. His plots are ingenious, complex in construction but easy to watch, and no one has ever utilized props in coin magic the way David does. Think the Sleeve, the Tuning Fork, The Funnel, the Rainbow, the mini table, the black hole, the purse and glass, and so much more! I have worked with David and toured with him for years, and I am still amazed by the quality and quantity of material he can present with utter perfection. And if I can do it, I am going to get him to put The Sleeve into our DVD series, as it is a masterpiece of contruction. Wait till you see the climax of his Asian act on our next DVD series - it is simply ingenious!

Roth created so many great effects. He came out with a Video on the Okito Box put out by A-1 Multimedia. In the video he goes over the history of the boxes and many different slights. His Coins Across with the Okito is a nice effect.
In the past he was on TV, the Dick Cavett show, using the Okito, unbelievable to watch. I like his Hanging Coins Effect and I do his Shelled Coins Across all of the time. |

David's "Table" routines, which comprise Section Three (Chapter 11) of Richard Kaufman's "David Roth's Expert Coin Magic" book. BTW these include some of the favorites listed in posts above including Purse and Glass, Portable Hole, and Coins Through The Table (with the little table on top of the real table). Those routines - other than Portable Hole - are also on the DVD set David Roth's Expert Coin Magic... Made Easy, Volume 3.

Thanks for all the great replies.
Marion and Dr Rubinstein, you summed Mr Roth up perfectly for me. His plot's although complex in construction are so easy to watch. Everything makes perfect sense for the spectator and it doesn't look like he's doing any sleights. I've seen lots of magicians who, when doing a sleight in a routine, you can tell something is happening. You may not know what it is, but you know they are doing some secret move or other. Maybe it's just a subtle tensing of the muscles or maybe it's something more overt such as using unnatural movements. With Mr Roth I just don't see that. It's a perfectly flawless illusion in every way. The portable hole and The Tuning Fork seem to be a recurring favourite. I've seen both these routines and like them a lot. Does anyone know if they are taught on DVD anywhere?. I know they are in printed form but I find it much easier to learn when being shown. Thanks all Sean |

David's coin in bottle routine is insane...I also like his version of Bank Night. But for the lay folk...it's gotta be his 4 coin act; Coins Across, Chink-a-Chink and Winged Silver(Hanging coins) those 3 effects just flow so perfectly...and he dose them so *** well...
If you like David Roth you should get his "BOOK" Expert Coin Magic, there is a lot of stuff in the book that he dose not talk about or cover on the DVD's. He also has some really cool stuff in Richard Kaufman's Coin Magic book...and if you really want to find some great Roth stuff, check out his sections in Richard's Almanac Collected Ed....BTW...If you think he's good at magic...you should hear him play the piano. |

I love his one coin routine. To me, it is the standard to which all other one coin routines are judged and constructed off of. Why is the jumbo coin ending so overused? Because David Roth made it look far too good to pass up. His Tuning Fork is also a true classic. I'd also love to be able to get it on DVD. Do let me know if you find a source for it.
I can't wait for the Christmas season to be over, so I can finally get enough cash to get my hands on his Ultimate Coin Magic set. When my OxF set comes, I'm definitely going to start my study on his shelled coins across. |
