I have a spooky idea that I'd like to share with all of you. Please let me know what you think of it, or if it gives you some other related ideas.
I discovered that my color TV set which I bought about 5 years ago has a built-in timer function on it. Basically, you can program the TV to turn on and off at a pre-set time (like an alarm clock). I was thinking of doing some mentalism effects such as a "living dead test" or something along those lines involving a deceased person. I thought it would be really spooky and effective to time the climax of the mentalism effect to coincide when my TV set turns on. I was thinking of having the TV tuned to a channel where there is nothing but "snow" and static (reminiscent of that old movie "Poltergeist.") Also, I would have the volume turned up higher than normal. Bascially, the TV suddenly turning on by itself would be a "manifestation of" or "communication from" the deceased person that was the focus of the mentalism effect. A minute later, the TV would suddenly turn itself off! Just an idea. What do you think?? Also, it would really be effective and spooky to have some sort of device that would cause a regular table lamp or floor lamp that has already been turned on to suddenly start blinking on and off erratically. Anybody know of any such device? I am thinking along the lines of those miniature flash bulbs that you must insert into a string of miniature Christmas lights in order for the string to blink on and off. It seems that after inserting the flash bulb into the string of lights, it takes a minute or so for the string to actually start blinking on and off. Surely there is something similar out there on the market for a regular table lamp lightbulb to do the same thing -- anybody have any ideas??? Thanks! Frank

In this day and age of remote control TV, I really do not think it will play well. But if you want to go the route of making a 3D take TV which has a face push through it, Sir T has one, have to watch how you play it, can it can look cornie. His is used but he never calls attention to it, but someone always claims to see the face. If you have some skills you can make it so it is examinable, but it is costly!!!!!

To be honest, I think there is potential here... Even if it is just in a mentalism sense.
Someone things of a movie, one that they place a certain importance... They concentrate and suddenly, the tv clicks on, playing their movie. As soon as they open their eyes, the movie clicks off again... and the video player is empty... Hmmmmmm... Liam. |

Years ago, in an issue of New Invocation, I published an idea whereby, when you pass your hand over the screen, the picture distorts, slightly.
You might add that to the mix. However, it will NOT work on a plasma screen as far as I know. However, feel free to give it a try, but be careful. The method CAN damage an older set that does not have a "degauss" feature on it! I assume NO responsibility for any damage that might be done using the method published, either. Lee Darrow, C.Ht.

I think it has great potential, again it all depends on the story and how you play it, wtih the timer on off features in many, but not all tvs. and the idea of how many folks cannot program their electronics, if it is the ONLY effect of an evening, it might be suspicious, but as a final or near final bit of an evening long routine of events, I think it would play well. The VCR bit is good too, with VCR's at only 50$ or so in Costco or Fry's, a second one behind the tv, with the regular one on top. Pick your favorite force for a movie, let the vcr run or be set to start at a familiar scene " SHANE! Shaaaane!!"
etc. I think you are onto something fun!

Why not purchase an old old TV in an old case, made before the advent of all the remote controll stuff? You can still hook it up inside to electronically do everything described above and still look like an antique.
A friend of mine has one hooked up in just such a way so it can be done. It was an old prop from the "Lucy" exhibit at Universal and she bought it for $10. You could run the electronics via another plug in( A Lamp on top etc.) and you could show the TV to be "Unplugged"....! Dave

Why not hook it up so the vcr also turns on, then use a video rabbit to send the video to the tv from another room. when they check for a video tape there isn't one.

How about a timer in the wall?
This way when you "check" the tv, there will no time set for it to come on or go off in the menu. Spooky! Magickman

If you are doing this within the contents of a living and dead test, why not have the tv come on with a movie playing of the dead person. As though he/she came back from the grave to tell you who was written down.

SOOOO many eerie, movie-style possibilities here!
The technology available to add special effects to home movies is at an incredible stage right now! Imagine causing the lights to 'shudder' and suddenly go off! Or piping a cold, gentle burst of air into the room. Another gimmick would turn on the television after the 'cold spot' entered the room. On the television, a ghostly face is barely perceptible followed by the sound of someone speaking or whispering. Then everything in the room goes dark. The image on the television, could be manipulated to seem very spooky. The above events could be the final manifestation of a seance. Could be lots of fun and comparable to what people have seen in movies as of late! Good times. Tony Ley |

Just a thought- if you were to internally power the TV, using a battery and inverter (and esp. if you use an old wooden-cabinet style of TV), and have the TV set be UNPLUGGED - perhaps not even NEAR a power outlet... it might be even better. I wouldn't call attention to it, but have the plug coming up from the back and hanging over the top to the front.
Basically- do whatever possible to make it so that people don't think "remote" in any way... odd to think that what was once genuine magic, is just one of our ubiquitus trappings of daily life... Best, Dave Xanatos |

Borodin addresses this to a certain extent with R/C units that plug into your electrical outlet in one chapter of Sheherazade. Even though all of us are familiar with TV remotes, the idea of something like this happening spontaneously can be quite disturbing.

How bout if you noticed that a friend had a similar timer on their TV. After secretly setting their tv to turn off and on at certain time, you call them the next day a minute before that time and tell them to turn off all their lights and to stare at their television- then hang up

As another suggestion programmable remotes are cheap, easily accessible and will work for most model tv's on the market. Buy a smaller one with a few simple functions and keep it in your pocket or bag... You could turn your frends tv on and off with relative ease and it would be sipler to program the remote than try to reprogram the tv (plus you would leave no evidence)
Just a thought.

If you set one of those generic programable remotes that can be used for all your remote controlled devices [t.v.DVD player,VCR] to "learn" mode and face
it toward a t.v. set, eventually the t.v. will turn itself on. I watched "The Ring" one day and my remote did this a few days later. I'm a fairly rational person, but it seriously freaked me out. I finally figured out what happened Cheers, James Linn
