I have one simple rule: Always use amplification equipment if entertaining more than 14 people.

It is a simple rule, yes. But when performing walkaround in the 80's the feedback that I often received was "He was very entertaining but I couldn't hear a word that he said, despite the fact that we were standing in a tiny room and he was shouting very loudly."

Follow-up:

Went without PA on this one. It was the right decision.

Despite the rowdiness of the well-lubricated group of 25 or so, this was the way to go, as a PA
would have compromised the intimacy of the setting.

At the end of the night, I'm happy to report that it was a complete success.

Thanks for all the responses/opinions to my initial question.
