I see there are several lists purporting the best places in the world to live, but I was wondering what everyone thinks are the best places to live in the world for magicians in terms of getting gigs!

Somewhere that is street performer friendly I would imagine would be nice. I don't do much street performing due to the regulations where I live but I imagine it would be nice to be able to street perform during slow periods.

I was just in El Paso doing a corporate gig. It seemed a nice town although I am not sure about Juarez just across the border!

Best,
James

I believe the best place to be to perform magic professionally in clubs on stage is Japan and Europe. These places still use small acts as well as large acts for entertainment.

Norm Nielsen spent 20 years or more in Europe performing. Shamada performs more in Japan then the US. Many performers perform in South America at the very best resort places in that continent.

I moved to a well-to-do suburb back in '95 after looking at the median income of the area. This suburban area caters to the high-income medical, banking and tech industries in the area. The disposable income and relative young families surrounded by three of the top universities in the country defined my target market. The tight and social communities benefit my word-of-mouth campaigns and I make a very comfortable living without the need of constant traveling more than a few hours in any direction. It's the ideal semi-retirement, as far as I'm concerned.

Best place to live in the world?? Vegas, baby!! Come join the 850+ magi living and trying to work in this town!!! (850 is the number currently on the Gary Darwin magic club phone list...there may actually be more than 850.) The 2010 census didn't count magi this time around.

I live in Ellicott City, Maryland. Always in the Forbes top 10 places to live in the USA, this year was #4

I do ok, but I work DC and Northern Virginia often, where the economy is different from the rest of the country

Probably not Australia, eh, mate. Have the floods hit your home?

Regarding James Munton's statement about Juarez ... there's lots of big parties in that town that appreciate great entertainment ... many of the successful business men have large homes and often import talent. They are reluctant to leave their houses, hence the desire to bring in Gringos.

You need to ensure you are provided an armored limo and request to be paid in advance. It helps, but isn't necessary that you speak Spanish. Jokes about the DEA and coyotes are not advised.

I live in Graterford, Pa. which is famous for having a maximum security prison. That is why I tell people that I live it the nice little town next to us called Collegeville, Pa which has a small liberal arts college where rich kids go to school. Collegeville has a much nicer ring to it.

For kid performers, try the upper half of Florida, away from the hurricanes. It shows good weather throughout year. I would put a kid's performer second best spot in San Diego area. It is good weather too, but a lot of competitors.

A corporate entertainer's best spot will be in New York because of so many businesses.

A theatrical performer best spot will be in Las Vegas and Tokyo.
