...but I want to get Tarbell's entire course...obviously this is worth it, however, with the same amount of money (200 dollars), would it be much more worthwhile to buy many individual books? For example some of Ortiz's works or Kaufman, or (insert author here). I am an amateur but still want to advance in my studies, until I reach the point that I find my show to be worth something. The books I have currently:
Bobo's Royal Road The Amateur Magician's Handbook Joshua Jay's Course These are great sources and I will continue to use these, however like I said, I was originally planning on getting Tarbell's but it dawned on me that I could also get assorted books for the same amount. Any opinions? |

Ye gods... As my wife says: "Tarbell, it's all you need."
I know many pros who are using material straight out of Tarbell to pay their mortgages... It has a wide range of powerful material that plays very well with lay audiences. It is core material for anyone interested in magic... |

BTW, I also forgot to note that I have Expert at the Card Table and a few other assorted books.
@sleightly Thanks for the reply. I think I will most likely side with Tarbell in this case. Any other opinions? |

Absolutely Tarbell, cannot go wrong though I have not finished studying through it yet.
Since you mentioned Ortiz, as with any thread about books, I always recommend his Strong Magic book to help perfect your showmanship and ability to connect with audiences, and his At the Card Table DVD's. On the topic of theory - Magic and Showmanship is another great book.

If you don't have to have brand new Tarbells, you can usually find them selling for a good discount from someone doing some downsizing. They are often still new, like new or in excellent shape. They are sold here often and at other sale and auction sites. You don't even have to get them all at once either. Pick up the first two, and you'll have plenty of time to search for deals on 3 and 4 on the internet as you go through 1 and 2. Look for Denny Haney's thoughts on Tarbell to help you decide.

The Tarbell books may well be the best investment you will ever make in magic -- a basic grounding in all facets of magic, including sleights, props, presentation, magic theory and more. Smart move.
The suggested patter in Tarbell is sometimes outdated, but that's not a problem because you should be creating your own patter anyway. SETH

There is an auction for the first seven volumes of Tarbell at a popular auction site. Since you are based in the US you can also choose to pickup 1 volume of Tarbell every month as shipping costs are negligible or free. Also do apply for a learned pig account if you can. The approval process takes some time but you get Jinx, the original tarbell course, Art of magic and other books in pdf format.

If you go to the Special Guest section and look up Denny Haney, you will get a great pitch on why you should own Tarbell. After reading it I was went back to reading it. Go for it!

Nothing compares to Tarbell.
I've written entire shows based on material within Book One. I've long thought that if I was asked to instruct a new magician, I would just give them Tarbell One, and as many of the necessary gimmicks as possible. Tarbell is rarely the final answer to anything, but it's frequently the first answer for everything. |

You can get these in ebook form as well and save quite a bit.

Folks,
The Tarbell course offered on Lybrary.com and the hard bound volumes are VASTLY different. The Lybrary.com version is the ORIGINAL course, meaning, you do NOT get the Lorayne written volume 7 and the Kaufman edited 8th volume. Plus, the hard bound editions contained more material even in the first 6 volumes. Get the books. अहिंसा Vlad |
