I honestly think if in practice you will rely on a prompter, you might have problems in an actual show.
Pardon me if Im old school but better to practice without a promter as in the script on a prompter. Maybe some guide or keywords...

Sometimes Jeff Dunham held a piece of paper on his left hand DURING his show whenever he was trying out new material. The paper contained prompts for his new jokes. I saw a few clips of him doing this in youtube.
I've been doing 2-hour adults shows and I must say memorizing my whole routine takes a looooooooot of practice in the house and in front of the audience. If I need cue words to help me, I write them on a piece of masking tape and tape it on my mic stand. |

Exactly my point... Keywords ... not the actual script
If you write an actual script and read it, it wont look profesional and certainly wont be entertaining.

He picked up the little device, which I then realized was a remote control for a TelePrompter, to scroll to where the new material was. The prompter was in what appeared to be a monitor speaker directly in front of Jeff during the show. |

Cool!
But I'm guessing it did not include the actual script but just keywords BUT I could be wrong

Jeff has to work in new material all the time, he has fans, they come to see his shows over and over. They want to see some classic stuff and some new stuff every time. I can see why it's practical to use a teleprompter for him.
The key is this; know your characters very, very well. Have a core act that you know very well also. When you are trying out new material, it isn't at all uncommon to use a cheat sheet with keyword notes like Wanlu is saying. Don't cheat when you practice or you will never learn the material as well as you should. I have an act I have been working on for nursing homes. The act is a 'radio show' and it's designed to be repeated for the same homes, same audiences on a regular basis. My idea for the act is to re-create the experience of being at a live broadcast of an old time comedy radio show. In those shows, the actors would read from scripts and drop the pages as they went. I wouldn't be doing exactly this, I would memorize some of the show, but when I do comedy news or stock reports etc., I plan to read them off a sheet, with Henry of course providing commentary. This way, I can insert new material every month without having to memorize an entire new show all the time. I think you could do the same kind of thing with the Sunday School kids, Buzz, having Dan read fractured fairy tales, or you reading bible stories while Dan makes funny comments. It would give you a reason to have some of your script in front of you during parts of the show. That way you only have to know some of the show by heart. It really does help with comedy though be really comfortable with your core material. Like I've said, timing is very important, and searching through a script or fumbling with a teleprompter will adversely affect your timing and delivery and take away from the laughs. |

I‘m thinking that If I read the script enough times, while I’m in rehearsal and do it in front of a camcorder with a teleprompter attached, I will learn the script and at the same time work on Dan’s movements and expressions. The script has to be read until I memorize it; may as well do both at the same time and review it for professionalism. Do you think I’d depend on it, after I memorize the routine while reading from a teleprompter? |

IMHO... if in practice you depend on it, in an actual show you might not feel confident without it.
Years ago, I had a guide index card with keywords... I remember panicking in one of my gigs when that card was misplaced. But Im not an expert so please don't take my word for it...

But given a choice, I would prefer a teleprompter over an index card.
But still with just keywords and not a script I would rather see a word and know what to say... for examlenis I see "Mother in law" I would easily connect to my monkey jokes... "marriage" to the end of the world etc etc

One use for a telepromter is to have someone guide you... you can get feed from your teleprompter crew. Maybe like time remaining or if he noticed something and he needs to let you know, like maybe "wrap it up!" or "end with a song" and even have the lyrics of the song on the teleprompter

I reread my post and I may not have been as clear as I should have been.
If I rehearse a script using a camcorder and a teleprompter and at the same time manipulate Dan to the point that I have memorized the script so I can repeat the routine anywhere, anytime. When I feel confident in my memorization of my routine to continue to rehearse with the camcorder and without the teleprompter; to improve my stage presence and not depend on a teleprompter. I believe this method to be superior to sitting at a desk and memorizing a script, then working in front of a camcorder to rehearse moving the figures. Is there something in my theory that I’m not taking into account? |

Teleprompter crew, my only crew While rehearsing is Dan, my figure; he refuses to give to me any direction..
Anyway, my first routines will be short while I acclimate myself to my new career. |

In an actual show, if you plan to have a teleprompter, you must have a crew unless you plan to carry your stuff from the car tonthe venue on your own and set it up on your own.
There are no right and wrong answers here... Whats effective for one could not be effective for another but it does not make anyone wrong... Do what you think js effective and perhaps share with ua your exeriences both in practice and in actual shows. Best of luck Buzz

Wanlu,
I am still receiving comments on the original question of using a teleprompter, not only for my information, but any other Café member that has the same question. It was already suggested to me that the use of a teleprompter during a live show in front of an audience is not recommended. My point was, is it useful in practice to use a teleprompter with a camcorder for rehearsing; or memorizing the script and then practice in front of a camcorder as a separate task. As for a crew; I plan on performing my show with backdrops, props P.A. Systems and various other items. I use a company called Manpower; Manpower supplies labor by the hour and as the employer of the person I have to carry and protect my equipment while I socialize, insures him for workman’s compensation and records his tax withholdings; if an injury occurs during lifting, carrying, or loading the employee is covered by Manpower and I am not exposed to liability or law suits. I pay manpower a fee for this service; it has served me well for all my projects that require temporary short time help. |

Its cool you have such kind of
manpower service, Im guessing its expensive. But it would be nice to have someone as part of your personal crew. Someone who will actually care about the act and your image. As for the prompter... Use it if you think it would help you in practice... Its really up to you.

Oh for practice?
Practice the act with a teleprompter... could work, best thing is to try it then let us know how it went. Best of luck

This enables me to join the party and network. For many years as an event photographer I relied on this service and factored the cost into my rate. |
