I just watched a news story about GM's amazing turn around. Seems the bailout has worked very well.
Are things starting to generally feel better over there? |

Nope.
Don't let B.S. stories about GM fool ya. We are nowhere close to better.
You know why don't act naive.

I disagree. I think we're better, but we're still nowhere close to good.

Here in the U.S.A. things are much better now.
I am going into my third year without a cost of living increase or raise. Instead of hiring the needed help we are working 50 hr. weeks and doing the extra work of at least 1/2 a person (management admits this to us but tells us we should be grateful we have a job). Meanwhile Upper Management are still getting their bonuses. I have never seen moral so low in a workplace. Sometimes the thought of being unemployed does not sound so bad but then again I am grateful that I have a job. Management could be a little kinder and not tell us about their bonus and free lunches they enjoy while we are told to work faster or else we can and will be replaced. Heard on the news this morning that one out of seven American's are on Food Stamps. Yes, things are very good at this time. Iven

Hi Destiny, my experience here in Northern Virginia is that our economy is definitely showing signs of growth. Albeit slow growth, we are moving in the right direction here. More hiring and more homes being sold than last year- and for more money. Our metro area may be somewhat insulated from the general economy though since we are are 30 minutes from DC where the government employs almost 2 million workers. I don't work for the Feds and my pay has been frozen for the past 3 years, causing me to become disgruntled with the rest of them. But I am truly greatful to have remained employed with the same company for 23 years and am proud to be part of a team that has managed to hold our own through this terrible recession.
I realize that my experience is not shared by all her in the U.S., but I do see signs of a healthier economy looming on the horizon. How are things there? James |

Cuts, cuts, and more cuts; the states are bankrupt; education, public transportation, firefighting and policing are cut to the bone and beyond; unemployment is in the double digits, the workers that have jobs are having their contractual pensions taken away; public buildings are being sold to private interests for one-time fast infusions of cash; credit card rates are in the 20% zone and can go up to 30%, while savings accounts and money markets pay less than 1%; and social security and medicare are up for slashing.
Meanwhile The banks that we bailed out are making record profits; the Wall street companies that were bailed out with our money are giving large bonuses; the Congress votes for a trillion dollars for the military, but zero for 9/11 responders; and the wealthiest Americans got the largest tax break of any class, while the poorest Americans actually effectively got a tax increase. There used to be a mayor here in New York, Ed Koch, who when campaigning would go out in the streets and call out," How'm I doin'?" The story goes that one day, a little old lady told him the truth: "Ed, you're doing great. The rest of us, not so good." So all that by way of answering your question about the economy: the rest of us, not so good.

Here in Nevada the unemployment rate has gone up again, I have not had a request for an interview in months, my unemployment just ended because while the news says the fed extended it it seems that isn't true 'for everyone' per unemployment. I will likely have no gas, no phone, no net, and no food by next week.

Progress has been slow, but heading in the right direction. GM has turned it around, The "Cash for Clunkers" program was a success, and the Dow is up significantly (from 7949 in Jan. 2009 to 11,559 today). In my state (CT) unemployment is below the national average (9.0 compared to 9.7). People here are cautiously optimistic. Echoing what S2000magician said, I wouldn't call it "good" by any stretch, but better.

So, all is well.

Our daughter's been sending out résumés and getting the sporadic interview the last few weeks. This week she had several interviews and just got a (relatively good) job offer. Things are looking up for some, not for others. As always.

Much of the "Hiring" that I see in my area is for short term jobs through a Temp Agency. This may be ok for a single person but not for a person with a Family to support.
Wall Street making record profits or GM doing well does me no good. The "Cash For Clunker's" program did me no good. My car (a clunker) did not qualify for the program and even if it did I would not take advantage of it because it would only put me in debt because I would then have monthly car payments to make. Until the real experts are listened to our situation will not get much better. In some cities we are told not to call the police for property theft, it's just not a priority and they will not respond. Let's borrow more money from our favorite shark (the Chinese) they seem to give us all we want. That's our solution. Our Government is no different than a Junkie and the Chinese is our connection. Funny how the Government will take away our possesions or throw us in jail for not paying our taxes but it is ok for them to borrow, borrow, borrow but not pay back. Yes we do pay the interest (acording to the Government) but no talk of when or how we are going to pay back the principle. I wish my bank would allow me the same courtesy. Iven

Unemployment here is 15% and my wife is screaming at me as I type because she isn't getting to go to the coast and relax for a week starting tomorrow. Seems she doesn't realize that if I'm broke so is she...oh, I guess I've ruined the last 20 plus years of her life based on what she just said.
The govt. only gets blame for, since the late 80s, making trade agreements which made it easy for manufacturers to move over seas and not only take advantage of good cheap labor, which is all it is, but also removed duties on those products when they were imported. Some states have made it virtually impossible to do business in them if you are a manufacturer, they have raised taxes thus decreasing the amount of money people have to spend on products. Well, that doesn't matter any longer since any manufacturing that could leave the US has left and a country dependent on imports is in trouble. Paper pushing and the sort is still good I would guess, the companies that make money by not producing anything or hiring anyone other than execs and their file clerks. We are screwed. |

Here in Los Angeles, the 2 weeks before Christmas used to be a living nightmare at night, on the road or in stores. Everybody out buying.
Now, nothing. No traffic snarls, plenty parking. No matter what the pundits reveal, I think stores are biting it this year. The folks were certainly out for the fairs, tho. Even with parking expensive and some gates way too high, the crowds were, mostly, back. That's seen an improvement in the last several years.
