The sideways baseball cap is particularly interesting. But for real effect, try it with a yarmulke.

On second thought I would pay to see a video of you performing that one.

I'm sorry Al,
All the video of the Hip Hop Rhymin' version of this effect has been ruined by the hands waving in the air (like they just don't care) and "Raising the Roof" in front of the camera. A word of caution though, it is important to make the correct "Gang Sign" at the end for the area in which you are working. It's hard to turn that one around. -Mary Mowder |

I don't think that an over weight, grey haired grand pop could pull that one off, but thanks.

Lol. Although, I would pay to see that as well!
My favorite opener is by far the Axtell off the meter then I go into the vanishing ketchup up bottle by neilson. For some reason, parents always say, "I loved the ketchup trick." mike |

I always open my show with Thimble Manipulation. It lets the children and clients know I'm actually quite good and worth watching. It also tells the adults that they can watch and enjoy the show as well without having to literally tell them.

I like to open with banter (different most shows) and I can be ten minutes in before the first magical effect occurs. The idea is to establish my character and get them laughing. Bill Cosby said that if you spend a few minutes getting the audience to like you, then they will come along for the ride with you, and enjoy everything you do.
My first effect is generally a balloon swallow, multiplying bananas, or some messing with a hanky based on Quentin Reynold's hilarious Five Minutes with a Pocket Hanky. But the story is far more important than the magic at that point. PS: The Might Fool has a mighty opening. I love the sound of it.

No prob Ed! ANY opener is great if you put your all into it, including the jumbo wand.
Tony, thanx for the kind words, and if you like '5 minutes with a pocket handkerchief', you might check out '20 minutes with a balloon'.
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

I open with a Ferret appearance (a la circus wagon), then I make it disappear/reappear (via a dagger livestock vanish), then I complete this with a rabbit (i mean ferret) wringer. The kids love it and then I use the promise of petting the ferret if they are good. This helps a lot.

Ferrets stink and they are "squirrely". I do not mean that as a criticism or anything, but I was a ferret owner and they have an odor, and they wiggle around a lot. They also bite, and when they do they tend to not let go.
I am curious as to how you deal with that in a show. |

I open with a stiff rope routine. Call it a magic word tester... a magic word will be needed for the show today, so let´s test some... Get the kids to shout words (lots of opportunities for jokes here). Each word almost gets the rope to stay rigid, but eventually fails, and the rope goes limp. This gets the kids to say many words and start working as a group and following my instructions.
Finally, one magic word works, and this is the one that will be used throughout the show. Now comes the fun part... in order to make the rope go back to normal, the kids need to say the word backwards!! After some more fun, the rope goes back to normal and the show starts for good. |

I have two right now that are the most loving creatures. They will not bite. I trained them when they were little. As for them wiggling around your are right. This is in part why I use them in the beginning of the show. To get around that I have added a piece of blace plastic to my props and add a vitamin named Ferretone (Which they love). When they are eatting the vitamins you can pretty much do anything to them. For example, when I have to cut their nails I put some on their belly and lie them on their back. As they are licking it off their belly I am cutting their nails with ease. So back to the props. I add this vitamins in the corner on the plastic and they eat it and are quite and not moving. Easy peasy for me. As for the odor, you can not do much about that. This is why they do not run around my house and they are in a gigantic cage in the well ventilated garage. As for the performance, they do make a perfume spray for them and that works just fine. I hope that this answers your question. I love those little guys. Whenever I have a bad day I let them run around in the garage and it makes me laugh every time as they are natures comedians. Patrick |

They are very cool little animals. One time mine crawled up inside the arm of my friends jacket and bit him and did not let go. We could neither take off the jacket nor pull the ferret out! I since learned that is one of the ways they hunt; the latch on to the neck and hang on! I, personally, was never bitten, but I think my concern would be for kids. Heck, I had a mean ol' buck rabbit that used to snort and bite!

LOL! The Kids never get close to their mouth. They are taken off right away and when the show is over and if they were good (which is always) I bring Boomer (ferret) out and make him into a ball and they pet his back as I hold his head down. My ferrets do not bite but why chance it.
