Your objection is a thought worth considering but something which should not be over thought. Ask yourself what is it you believe the spectators with think if you set it to vibrate. If I had that worry, I would do the following: Write a prediction; drop the pad into someones' shirt pocket; borrow a phone from someone else and set it to vibrate (if it is not already set that way); drop it into the same pocket; ask the person to put their hand on the phone and to yell the second they feel it go off. If you MUST justify the action, say that one's reaction to a feeling is instant while there is a delay in people's reaction to sound.

During a theater show, why not just ask everyone to set their phone to vibrate at the beginning of the show so that the show isn't disturbed by people calling, which is a normal request to make. Pay attention to someone who follows this instruction. Then, when using the moment later in the show, just select the person you noted earlier who's phone you know is set to vibrate.
