What is the rope trick of the year to you? To me it is Awakening.

Yet, another good comment about Awakening. Looks like I will have to take a closer look at it.

I am not sure how many new ones were released but out of the ones that were, The Awakening certainly was a surprise to me the first time I saw Dan perform it at a lecture.
The magic is not in our sleights and illusions, but instead in our ability to bring love and joy.

There are not that many great rope tricks being invented, after all George Sands kinda did it all years ago. Before "Awakening" the last good new rope routine that I saw was "dances with ropes" by Magician about four, or five years ago.

I like awakenings, but it is repetitive and has a few flaws. Nevertheless it is concise and mostly original in handling. I suppose this topic limits the time scope to 2010. That being the case, I give it a vote, if in fact it happened in 2010.

Even I haven't had a "new" (non-derivitive) effect since my "Dances with ropes". I have seen many great rope routines, that are much more intricate and entertaining than awakening. None of them are unique enough to qualify as a 2010 effect. Of course, you're kind of biased, having worked with Dan on a Christmas show. (lol)

To me no rope trick has beat Harold Sterling's Short and Long rope trick for entertainment value and it is maybe 50 years old. Second is another oldie, The Neff Miracle Rope.

In the last several decades there have been four routines that have taken rope magic to another level "Tabary", "Full Circle", "Fiber Optics", and "Dances With Ropes". Although "Awakening" is very clever it is not on a par with the other four routines IMHO. Dynamike As you can see since the death of George Sands there hasn't been a lot of real rope magic invented.

Oh my well I need to get my spectacles fixed. Title of this thread Rope trick of year 2010 Proposed question! What is the rope trick of the year to you? Now if the title of this thread would have been. "Best rope trick to take rope magic to the next level in 2010" or "Best rope tick ever!" you may or maynot have a valid point however that is not the title of this thread now is it. If you are assuming that this thread was to boast the great work of the rope technicians of this world then I guess I did not read this correctly. However if this thread is truly asking "Rope trick of year "2010" then I guess my post of just saying "Awakening" stands because even if it was the only one it was the best for this year hands down. By your statement above it makes it the best since it has been years since anyone has come up with something new with ropes. But lets not let that stop you or whoever put's their creative rope minds together to come up with something that will top it. We are in 2011 now so give it a shot. Till then I will stick with Awakening along with my good old trusted C&RR routine I do and people love to watch. Where I take offense is when someone says I am biased because I know the creator and that has nothing to do with my professional opinion of an effect. I personally know many creators and that has nothing to do with any of my posts. Cheers Floyd

A good friend of mine (Funny Magic Dude) showed me Awakening last week. Excellent rope routine. Awakening has my vote too.

It should be pointed out that this category is for rope tricks that were RELEASED in 2010, and Awakening also gets my vote for 2010, although Wiz Kid Qua-Fiki's "Step Ladder Revenge", also published in 2010, makes use of ropes in a new way for escapes/ illusions, but it should not be considered a rope trick and escape artists aren't running an "escape of the year" competition.
However, in 2010 he also invented a new and original rope effect that he calls "Snakey, the Living Rope" that I have advised him against releasing for at least five years... maybe longer. It can't be considered for this category because it's not going to be released for some time, but I think it will be a knockout for "Rope Trick of Whatever Year" he decides to part with it. I'm mentioning it here only so that when he does release it, he can prove that it all began in 2010, and to cheer up those who seem to think nothing new is coming along in rope magic. As long as we encourage young magic inventors, there will always be something new in every magic category.

Don't really post in this part of the Café, although I do visit and read most new topics.
I just watched the Awakening video on YouTube. And I watched the Dances With Ropes video too whilst I was there. Now, I have neither routine so methods-wise I can't comment. I know how I'd do the effect (been playing with it all day and finally figured out a couple of methods of my own). But to me, looking at the magic that happens, both Dances and Awakening seem very similar. Too similar for me to be able to say that Awakening is the top rope effect of 2010. In fact watching Awakening I would guess that the method is the same as mine for the most part. I don't want to say too much in open forum, but I will say I hated the part where all 3 ropes are gathered in one hand (as in the trad prof nightmare). Those that have seen the trick will know the bit I mean. That really let the trick down for me. In my method this isn't a problem. And watching the Dances video it isn't a problem for Ian either... Maybe I stumbled on his method. Who knows. So although Awakening is nice. It's not the number 1 rope effect of last year. For me the Mikame Rope Blackboard, which was released around April/May of 2010 (I think) would get my vote over Awakening.

Awakening may have been the only major rope trick of 2k10, but I liked the demo
and it's now on my wish list.. ...
