This is a beginner question.
1) ¿How long can be a person stuck in "sleep" mode? When you do your induction, an you leave the person there, is a certain time he can be "sleep" or not? 2) If you tell someone, "the people in the street are now animals", and you never get him "out" of trance. Is possible, his entire life he see animals. (just a nonsense example). For I'm concern, people can quit smoking forever. Thanks. |

Usually post hypnotic suggestions disappear very shortly especially if they aren't aligned with the values of the "victim". They would be a victim in the above scenario. Because they were not taken out of trance and ALL suggestions removed.
However it is possible to mess with somebody's mind and set up a situation that could affect the person for a long time afterwards. Or accelerate a problem they already have. The thing is its near impossible to prove so that makes a lot of Hacks believe its ok to do thoughtless things. After doing many years of therapy I have worked with countless clients who had severe limitations in their lives which could always be traced back to one or two single event in their lives which had an impact. Something at school or a repremand by a horrible boss in front of the staff for example. I actually worked with someone once who had had such an experience was almost suicidal at the time. Three years on the problem got steadily worse until he couldn't leave the house was ready to quit his job and business degree. When I went to see him at his home the rining of his bell made him run to the toilet to spew. Its more than possible that someone going through an experience with an unskilled hypnotist could either escalate an underlying problem or set a new one in motion. So be careful. |

For 99.999% of people, they will either:
1.) Wake up from a hypnotic state ont their own 2.) Go into a natural sleep, eventually waking up 8 hours later, if left in trance. These are the only 2 options since, hypnosis is not an unnatural state but rather a normal state we all experience each day with or without formal hypnosis. In the example you gave people WANT to follow the suggestions to not smoke. There is reward and social benefit reinforcing this. This is not the case with "seeing animals" What about the .001%?? While, there are mentally ill people, psychologically unbalanced people, delusional people, people with diffused sense of ego, and can we control, manipulate and screw with their reality? Probaly. In fact the news is full of this. This is why ethics is important, and training to help a person deal with abreaction. Remember, hypnosis though is secondary at a hypnosis show. entertainment is first. Many of the crazy suggestions given at a stage how work not becasue a person is or is not hypnotized, but becasue in this social setting the elicited ebhavior is the norm. But once the show is over and they walk out the room, no amount of hypnosis will elicit those same behaviors where it is not socially accepted.

I would agree with everything Richard has said above with the exception. I think it may be possible that certain suggests may have a continued effect even if there is no outward signs. I have heard friends tell me they were at a show on holiday and one of their friends re-triggered the behaviour at a bar later. If somebody can create a problem by being ridiculed by their boss that develops into something much more a few years later. It is surely possible that a bad hypnotist could plant the seeds of a problem on stage or accelerate a current underlying problem. It is thought that hypnosis more than likely triggered the underlying problem of schitzophrenia in the Mckenna trial. Don't let anybody on here tell you its clear-cut 100% safe. Especially if they sell products. |
