I'm just curious how most get payment. Cash or do you accept a personal check from these strangers. And do you get paid before the show or after? I assume it depends on if it's a repeat customer?

I accept personal and corporate checks. In more than thirty years of performing I've had five bounced checks - three were mistakes that were corrected on the spot and two were intentional with checks written on closed accounts. Checks aren't a huge risk factor for me.
Although, I am taking another look at running credit cards through my iPhone. I made a purchase at the Apple store a week ago and the clerk who helped me checked me out on the spot with his iPhone. Made me sit up and take notice - times are changing and I need to catch up.

I most often get checks, and usually after the show.

Cash or checks for me. I always get payment after the show as I have a 100% money back guarantee.

I think in the apple store the phone just sends info to their credit card machin. They have an add on to their phones, it's not something you can use out and about but I'm sure it wont be long. Paypal is useable but who pays the fees?

Still it was impressive as heck. The iPhone scanned the barcode, rang up the sale, ran my card, I signed the screen with my finger and I received the receipt and all warranty information in an email - which is a pretty slick way to collect email addresses for that newsletter mailing list. I was in and out of the store in about five minutes! Quote:

Bruce reports that the units are now being delivered on schedule. If the Apple Store system is proprietary or linked to a larger system as Colin suggests, then I'm definitely going to look into Squareup.

After years of messing with different formats I now take a 30% deposit upon booking. It's paid into my PayPal account. The balance is due in cash upon arrival. I don't think I've lost any events because of the deposit policy...and, while many parents still pay after the show, I have never not been paid.
When I was taking checks I got the odd one that bounced -- which is a pain in the you-know-what to chase down. Much happier with this system -- it also gives me PayPal money to play with while I can still bank the cash.

Cash or check and after the show is fine with me. Sometimes I get a tip and one time it was $105, so I'd be cutting myself out of tips if I asked for the money in advance.
I do not advertise it but I feel that if for some unknown weird reason someone did not like my show then I'm fine if they do not pay me. I have enough confidence in my show that will never happen. |

I have said this before, I accept cash, or check after my show. I do not offer a 100% refund, what I say to them is "pay me after the show, if you liked it". In over 23 years I have only got two bad checks, and they were both from the same lovely lady. The second bad check was to make restitution for the first bad check, after the second one bounced, and I was charger $20 for each bad check I gave up on her. God will have to get even with her. LOL

I've gotten used to accepting cash only, due to 2 bad checks over the years. For individual (non-corporate or business) shows, I get a deposit of 1/2 the fee. The deposit is non-refundable if they cancel without a new date..as in change their minds at the last minute. Businesses, libraries, cities and such can pay with a check, that's fine. I'm not technologically-advanced enough for swiping a card with my NOT smart phone. I usually offer to accept paypal for the deposit, but around here, apparently nobody knows what I'm talking about. Go figure. Guess it's hard to hook the hand crank phone to a computer...heh heh heh.

I have been holding out on accepting credit cards because I feared the transaction time would be too uncomfortable for me on days when I’m in a rush. This looks very easy and very fast. And the transaction percentage is reasonable too. I’m getting one.

The big downside (and for me a deal breaker) of the Square system is that you can't use it to take deposits over the phone. The card must be physically present.

I'm lucky as I have access to a CC machine through a friend of mine. I take a 50% dep upfront, usually by phone. Other half is due at the end of party in either cash or check. Hopefully cash as there is more of a chance to get a tip. However, I was asked at the end of a party if I could just run the card again. He told me to add a 20% tip onto it. that's always nice!

I use Intuit for my credit card processing. It is very cheap - $15 a month, I think.
I have been very happy with the service. |
