I am storyboarding a silk act, Now I have run into a mental pause, I am standing on the stage and just vanished a cane, I am holding two silks ... now what? Any ideas on what I should be doing next?

For a total silk act, no. But right after I did the vanishing cane to silks, I wadded them up and produced a dove. Maybe a fantasio candle, then light it and it turns into another silk?

A candle is a good idea. What about some type of a vanish or introducing a fountain of silks ... there are so many excellent effects out there ... it's getting to flow and contentuity that's the trick.

This is where the "cookie-cutter magician" looks through a magic catalog at all the tricks he can buy and finds something he can fit in to that spot. This is where the creative magician imagines the "impossible" (what other people call "magic") and works out a way to make it happen. So, what do you IMAGINE happens next?

Very good point, Spellbinder. But being new to magic I may be a cookie cutter magician. It's hard to imagine what is possible because of the lack of experience and knowledge. Gaining that experience and kknowledge where I live is difficult. The neatest Magic shop is 300 miles away. I do not know of any maigician in the area. I thought this site what be a good resourse.

My point is; don't imagine what is possible - imagine what is impossible. That's what magic is all about. This site IS a good resource, for once you have decided on what impossible thing you want to do, you'll find plenty of guys here who have done something like it or nearly like it before.

If it were me, I would do only ONE more silk trick as a closer to your silk routine.
Either... Produce a bottle from them. Look up "Splash bottle magic" on google. -Or- Vanish the silks (many methods, read the silks section of this site for ideas) and move onto another type of illusion or manipulation routine. Silks are a great attention grabber, but too much of them for too long you are at risk of boring an audience. Unless perhaps you have such a great stage persona that provides minutes of comedy value.

Cyberqat Inner circle You can tell I work on the net from my 2209 Posts |
I used to open my stage act with a match to flower and candle to red silk. Flower I pinned to my lapel, silk I tucked into my Jacket pocket.
I would take a step back and ask why did you change the cane into a silk to start with? If you have a motivation for that then you will know what comes next
It is always darkest just before you are eaten by a grue.

I agree with Cyberqat: why did the cane vanish? Did you do it on purpose? Why? Or did it just happen? Did you use the silks to cause or facilitate the vanish? Or were they just left in your hand after the vanish?
The cane vanish should be one intersection in the complete road. Where did you start? Where do you hope to end up? That will tell you whether you turn right or left at this intersection. I understand completely being the cookie-cutter-imagination-challenged newbie, 'cuz I r one!! I can do several routines quite well - straight out of the book, or as prompted by someone else. But I've also begun looking at who I am and what I'm trying to accomplish with a routine: where does my road begin? where should it take me? how do I drive? Just a bit of thought is taking my routines to new levels. So who are you as a magician? Who is your audience? What is this journey you are taking them on? Are you a sightseeing, joke-cracking tour bus driver? Are you a "get-em-there-now" New York cabbie? Are you showing them the great wonders of the earth? Or a totally befuddled gadget guy who picked up something at a yard sale and you figure out what it does or how to turn it off? Of course, lacking the experience to know if I'm actually re-inventing the square wheel, I bounce things around here quite often! (And I've learned that the rebuff from an experienced wonder-worker is a great help and not to be avoided or feared.) Soetimes it also helps to take a break from madly thinking about it and do something that stokes your creativity or sense of wonder. Ed |

Here's Mine: I have two silks in my hands, so I stuff them into my clenched fist and produce a sponge ball from them.

Here's a nudge: the cane is (I assume) black with white tips. The two silks should be one black and one white. Spin them together and blend them into a larger black and white zebra striped silk. You didn't mention doves so I am guessing you don't yet do dove magic (otherwise a black dove and a white dove might be next!). You could also go from here to alternating black and white billiard balls. I'd keep the black and white theme going for a time just to see where it ends up. If you don't like my nudge, back up and reimagine. It costs nothing to think, imagine, write down ideas and play with possibilities. If you want to end up with a black and white skunk, it could get pricey.

WOW so much to consider. This has starting me thinking. Ed, I like your advise on Who, what where and when is the show for. I have done magic in the past about 25 years ago. I nightclub remembers my show (he's old too) and asked if I dig out something to do in their Variety Show. I'ts been so long and some things have changed, (major vision loss) But I'm going to try. So I'm tying to put together something that is safe and doesn't involve a lot of movement on stage and most important I don't make a fool of myself.

Try Slydinis knots and then take each silk and transform each into the next item in your routine.

Oops maybe I'm getting to personal on here sorry guys... Nothing to be sorry for - you'd be surprised at what comes up in here! And we are now in a better position to help you. Do you have a newspaper tear? Perhaps produce a large red silk, and wrap it around the black and white ones. "What's black and white and red all over? A newspaper!" The silks transform into the paper, and you are set for your next routine. With the transformation, they'd probably forgive you for the bad joke! 8>) Ed |

Are the silks easily detached from the cane gimmick? If (as Spellbinder suggested) they are two different colors you could do a "jumping knot" without any other apparatus. Basically, a slip-knot on one gets flipped out as a one-handed knot gets tied into the other. It only runs a few seconds, but it gives you something to do with the silks. (IOW they won’t just be silks with no purpose.)

From here you can still do a "Double Dove production" effect. (No doves? What about spring bills or flowers?
