David Strassman - funny, very original, amazing character depth, Chuck Wood is just pure classic vent gone all the way past the edge
Terry Fator - nobody can do the stuff he does, just incredible Jeff Dunham - well, Jeff Dunham, come on, he's Jeff Dunham. Nina Conti - The beautiful and hilarious simplicity of Monk, great acting, clever and original, brilliant technique Jay Johnson - classic and modern at once, flawless technique, characters have such life If I had made it ten it would be too easy. With five you have to cut a couple or four favorites. Pick 5 and tell us why. Living, dead, whatever. I chose living because the playing field is more even with all of these guys on the planet at the same time. |

Edgar Bergen
Jimmy Nelson Paul Winchell Jeff Dunham Jay Johnspon (you didn't say they all had to be living)

Nope, I said either living or dead. I chose to pick only living vents myself, partially to shorten the list because I was having a hard time even getting under ten. But can you briefly tell us why these 5?

Only 5 Wanlu, only 5. Ok, I won't make you take any back. I understand, all the vents you listed were on my list too.

David Strassman: He gives his characters great depth; they have lives off the stage. He is constantly striving to be original. Chuck Wood is the classic cheeky boy--gone bad.
Nina Conti: another pure original. Am platonically in love with her. Monk is classic. Even when her humor is coarse (think Monk and the beer glass), there is intelligence and depth to it. Wish she'd use different substitutes for the plosives, though. "B's" are too often "G's." Jeff Dunham: for all he's done for vent (even though he sometimes disparages it in interviews). Senor Wences: incredible timing and technique. A musical rhythm to his performances. Projects class on stage. Paul Winchell: For me, it was all because of him. Honorable mention (yes, I know, it's cheating): Dan Horn for his absolutely incredible figure manipulation and overall great technique. Great topic, Dave. Thanks for starting it. Bob |

Bergen especially, I never stop enjoying watching videos I have of him and Charlie, or listening to the old radio shows, doesn't matter how much I've seen them over the years, I even have gotten to know some of the dialogue by heart just from listening to them so much, but still, I never tire of watching or listening to them. Nelson and Winchell - What little I have to watch of those two also never becomes old, but I also enjoy their technique, they are both excellent in all aspects. (I can't include him because I already have my 5, but Willie Tyler would be on my list and for the same reasons as Nelson and Winchell.) Dunham and Johnson, because they are now, I've gotten to see plenty of both and I enjoy them watching them.

Terry Fator - I JUMPED off the couch with glee when he won AGT. He is amazing
Jeff Dunham - Achmed and Walter are "belly laughing" FUNNY Jay Johnson - I was a "Soap" fan long ago because of Jay and Bob Mark Wade - great technique and Mark gives SO much back to the vent community Paul Winchell - one of the true vent legends NOTE: limiting choices to only 5 is hard to do! I appreciate and enjoy ALL vents!! |

Tough.
But I'd say... Nelson Johnson Fator Dunham Winch (In no particular order, and all for different and important to the art reasons) If I had two more choices I'd say Lewis and Bergen. If I had three more... |

Great topic David! I decided to stay with living vents too. Making a top five list was easier once I removed the greats of the past.
1. Strassman - originality and depth of character. 2. Jay Johnson - technical skill and creativity. (His modulations are amazing on his box voice.) 3. Nina Conti - incredible wit and originality. Her split from Monk is amazing to watch. Plus she is a genuinely warm and friendly lady. 4. Dan Horn - manipulation skills beyond belief. 5. Jeff Dunham - comedy and characterization genius and probably the ventriloquist who has done the most for the art to keep it in the public eye. |

Cy Leonard - I never got to see him perform, but he was definitely at it a long time. We had become on-line friends, and I wanted really badly to visit him and just try and get him telling me about his experiences all those years as a vent, I know there would have been a lot of interesting stories there. Sadly, I never was able to make it.
