I was looking at videos and came across Mind Bender , it looks the same as Psychokinetic Silverware, but it doesn't just focus on bending metal. What do you think of Mind Bender? Is Psychokinetic Silverware better?

Mind Bender is a total waste of money. Get Psychokinetic Silverware, Kuffs video on the subject, or get nothing at all. Don't waste your time or money on Mind Bender.

Just look at it this way: Mindbender is only one effect for bending metal (plus 2 other, one with coins another with rubber bands), with pk silverware you got 6 different bends you can do either with forks or spoons; and besides, it's from Banachek, this is like having a "seal" of good and solid effects
The bend described in mindbender don't really work for me, but maybe you'll find it useful. If you really want to learn how to bend metal I recommend you to get PK Silverware. There's lots of reviews of this tape here at the Café, just use the search engine if you need more info. |

dpe666 is a tad hard on mindbender! It is a fine bend in its own right but why not get Banacheck's and learn multiple methods and the real psychology of it all. Then consider getting mindbender if you want another method to add to your arsenal.

Yes but dpe666 is perfectly right. If you want to bend stuff get Kuff's videos or Guy Bavli's videos on the subject.

If you get the Bavli videos, get only the 1st one. It was the only one that was worth a ****. If you have the Kuffs and Banachek videos, anything else is pretty much a step backwards, or not nearly as good. Also, stay away from the gimmicked spoons and forks.

I have them all. Banacheks is by far the best. This isn't simply about learning the method to bend cutlery. That is the easy part. Banachek covers the real work about how to present it to gain maximum impact.
Guy has some great ideas on his tapes, there are two sets of three, and I agree with dpe666 that each set has a stand out tape. The others aren't a waste by any means, just not devoted to bends. And the second set is far more advanced than the first. You can see how much Guy has grown in the time between releases, not only in terms of his performance skills, but also in terms of the way he thinks. I recently had the pleasure to spend several hours with Guy and he is a nice "guy" to boot. And please let's not forget bending keys! In many ways I find this hits even stronger because you can't bend keys with your bare hands and audiences perceive this difference even if you never state it. Bend some keys first, then bend some cutlery and see what a difference it makes. |

I would love to bend keys but I can't get over the paradox (or at least the mindset) of: If the key is yours, the audience thinks it is gimmicked; if it is theirs, you could permanently damage an important key. Help!! One standard way out is to let it be known before the performance that you want the audience to bring keys they no longer want/need. (And yes, people really do keep keys to things they no longer have!) You can bend these with wanton abandon - or sneak your pre-bent key in with the mix of collected keys. |

rgranville,
Why would you need to sneak in a prebent key? If you can bend theirs, you can bend yours without having to risk getting caught sneaking anything in. Is there some routine where having a prebent key really offers enough of an advantage? I'm curious. Thanks. |

Get Banachek's and thank me later. Psychokinetic Silverware, along with Kuffs' tape is all you will need to be a very proficient metal bender.

Interesting discussion. I was in Davenports yesterday and the owner performed a spoon bending routine. It looked absolutely fantastic, so I asked for his source. He highly recommended the DVD "Mind Bender".

Hi Magixx
What kind of bending was it you watched at Davenports. Exactly like Chad on Mind Bender? Well I would agree that Mind Bender is really a great idea. Chad's idea on bending is really good and I use it quite often especially in informal situations. I would higly recommend both DVD. So IMO the basics because of the many ideas and tips, PK Silverware should be standard and MInd Bender as an additional clever variation. Though the thread is about compareing these two only I also want to mention Liquid Silver. Got it recently and its a nice routine and Morgan's tips are very good. But this should definitly be an additional DVD to Banachek's becuase of the referrences to PK Silverware. Just my thoughts Greetings Thomas |

What a funny way to start my morning! I saw this thread and thought a newbie to the Café was bringing up an old issue. Then I read dpe666's post and thought, "My Gawd, he's still ranting on about Mindbender two years later. This man must really, really hate the bend on Mindbender. Should I say something again?" Then I read a couple of posts down, saw mine, noticed the date and had a very good laugh. Thanks guys, I needed it!

Just reading through all the posts here and thought I would add a few comments. I purchased PK Silverware and a couple from the PSI series last fall. ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC stuff here, especially for a 'newbie mental bender' like myself. To me, there is NO BETTER foundation for learning this art, than from BANACHEK himself!
A little later on I bought Liquid Metal. I bought it more out of curiosity, as I had never heard of Morgan before. He has some good ideas for sure, which I will use, but will never perform this routine, as I HATE copying others. But a great resource to add to your 'metal bending library' for sure. I haven't purchased Chad's Optical Bend yet, mainly because I'm not interested in the Coin and Rubber Band effect, and from what I'm seeing on the demo video, which I've watched a number of times now, also in slo mo, which made it easier to understand his moves. Very nice looking bend though. If the price was in 'Canadian' currency, I'd probably buy it, just to have it in my library, but tooo pricey for the one bend. Just ordered Patrik Kuffs DVD from Camirand yesterday, as the reviews have mostly all been VERY positive. Can't wait to check it out. Also Patrik is Canadian, so THAT ROCKS!! I also have Richard's stuff on metal bending. Richard is an AMAZING thinker, and I love his ideas and moves. I really think rather than 'comparing' all these DVD's, just buy them all for your library, and learn from them all. By 'all', I mean those which teach mostly 'metal bending' stuff, or with a combo of mentalism. I don't like comparing any Metal Benders myself. I watch anyone I can, and try to pick up things I can use. The only thing "I" don't particularly like, and this is ONLY my opinion, as a newbie; but I don't like the idea of 'gimmicks' to get the bends, or gimmicked cutlery to bend (as amazing as they look). I want the REAL stuff, so I can bend, and give out as a souvenir. Just a few thoughts from a newbie on the matter. Kind Regards Smitty Ontario |

Osterlind's spoon bends on one of the Mind Mysteries videos (#3?) are swell. And Ian Rowland has a good one in his lecture notes. The best way is to use real PK power though.

You are right on Smitty:
I have bought all of the bending DVD's mentioned. Chad's optical bend is worth the price (I barely even watched the other parts, they are good... I was just interested in the bend)... I was not dissatisfied for buying it just for the bend. I used to live in Raleigh, NC (Chad is from North Caroliona, I even met him once a long time ago in the The Magic Corner, local shop there). I bought it at the behest of John Ferrante(sp?), local shop owner... have not looked back, the method is beautiful. However I recommend it for the first bend or 2, then put additional "work" (read: bends) and reveal in another way. I LOVE SPOON BENDING... it is all that is pure about this art. You take a normal, familiar object and do the impossible with it (and do all of the stuff right in front of the viewers). I almost get a tear (sniff, sniff)!!! |

This is the best subject in the whole of magic I think....
I think the basic bend in mindbender is superior to banacheks basic for one particular (very common) condition - where the cutlery is cheap and easily bent. But Banachek is essential for presentation and some other wonderful stuff |
